It was no use pretending. He was scared. It had been so long since Ginny had taken Harry. Since Valentine's Day. Had it really been that long? In some ways it felt longer. In others, Draco felt as though the events of that night had happened just yesterday. He hadn't been apart from Harry for this long since they were children and they had to go back home for the holidays. Sure, they hadn't been together then, and their feelings were anything but pleasant towards one another at the time, but there was still that sense of knowing the other was there. It was simply the way things were. The way they had always been between them.

Now, however, Draco ached with longing. He feared for Harry's safety. He was afraid of what Ginny might be doing to him, saying to him. He was scared that Harry would come to the realization, even if Ginny wasn't right for him -- which of course she wasn't -- that Draco didn't deserve him either. The longer they were apart, the more Draco's fear and self-doubt ate away at him. He shook his head to clear his mind of such thoughts. No matter what happened between them, he needed to get Harry away from Ginny. That was the important thing. He could handle whatever came later, just as long as Harry was safely out of her clutches.

He had run through the conversation he had had with Severus in his mind, over and over again. Once he was able to set aside those words -- he cares for her -- Draco focussed on the matter at hand. He needed to go to the Manor, and go through the collection of books in the library.

He owled Narcissa, advising her that he and a guest would be visiting the Manor the next day, and that they needed to access the library. He knew that, no matter the urgency, Narcissa would not be pleased if he simply showed up with a guest in tow, without warning. Decorum, after all, must be observed. He and Hermione would spend the afternoon at the local library instead.

Draco sensed Hermione’s mixed emotions. He saw her eyes light up at the prospect of going through all the ancient texts in the Manor library, knowing that many were one-of-a-kind. He could practically see her salivating. She really did need to get a life! But mixed in with that was fear. She tried to hide it, and did a fairly good job, but Draco had seen fear in the eyes of too many not to recognize it.

“Hermione, she won’t bite.”

“I know,” she said, sounding like she knew nothing of the kind.

“She’s my mother. She won’t do anything to hurt me.”

“Draco, I don’t mean to sound selfish, but it’s not you I’m worried about here. I am a Muggle-born, and I was part of the Order which fought against Voldemort -- your father’s boss.”

“Yes, and so was I. As for being a Muggle-born, there’s not much we can do about that, now is there?”

“No, but --”

“Hermione, listen to me. My mother is not Lucius, nor is she like him. Narcissa stood by her husband, because that was what was expected of her. In the end, however, she stood by me. Not my father, not Voldemort, but me. That should tell you something.”

“Yes. It tells me that she would protect you against anything and anyone. But that doesn’t mean she won’t try something with me.”

“My mother may not be perfect, but she most certainly will not try anything on you in my presence. In fact, I doubt very much that she cares one way or the other about you being Muggle-born. And if she does, she will have the good grace to keep it to herself. She is, after all, the consummate hostess.”

“If you say so.”

“I do say so. Relax, Hermione. You do want to help, right? Harry needs us to find a solution, and I can’t go through all those volumes myself. You should see them all! There are shelves upon shelves of books at the Manor.”

That did it. The sparkle in her eyes returned, and Draco knew the mixture of guilt and curiosity would win over her hesitation. He felt a little badly, manipulating her. Oh, who was he kidding? He didn’t feel badly at all. It was good to be a Slytherin!

"Hermione, this is my mother, Narcissa Malfoy. Mother, this is Hermione Granger."

"Granger ... Granger? Isn't she the Mu --" Draco cut Narcissa off with a glare. She returned his glare with one of her own and continued. "-- the Muggle-born witch that bested you in most of your classes at Hogwarts?"

Hermione cringed at the pained look that swept over Draco's face.

"Yes, mother, she is," Draco muttered, his face an unreadable mask once again.

"Well!" Narcissa said as she held her hand out to Hermione. "It's nice to see a witch put a wizard in his place every now and again." She smiled and winked at Hermione, causing the younger witch to relax a little. Chancing a look at Draco, Hermione saw him roll his eyes, his face a mixture of amusement and irritation.

Smiling, Hermione replied, "Well, I did what I could."

"Yes, well, all this female bonding is lovely," Draco interjected. "But we do have some work to do. If you'll excuse us, Mother, we need to look through the library."

"Of course, dear. Shall I send a house-elf in with some tea?"

Resisting the urge to launch into a house-elf rights diatribe, Hermione bit her lip.

"That would be lovely, Mother," Draco replied. "Thank you."

Draco looked up at Hermione through bleary, sleep-deprived eyes, wondering how they had ended up here.

He was sitting in the library of Malfoy Manor, with a Muggle-born, scouring Dark Arts books for a solution to his predicament. Were his father alive, he would no doubt be disowning Draco, if not hexing him into oblivion.

Here he was, the last in a long line of pureblood Malfoys, the end of the bloodline, and he was gay. To add insult to injury, he was in love with the man responsible for the death of Voldemort, the most powerful dark wizard ever, and his father's mentor. Of course, Harry had also been responsible for thwarting Lucius' own plans on several occasions, and landing the senior Malfoy in Azkaban.

If that weren't enough, he had brought a Mudblood into the sanctity of the Manor, and even worse, had granted her access to Lucius' private tome collection. Draco had already covered or removed the disgruntled portraits that had been colourfully shouting insults at the two of them. They weren't quite as bad as Sirius' mother's rants at 12 Grimmauld Place, as the portraits here -- like everything and everyone else in the Manor -- maintained some semblance of decorum, but their insults were no less venomous. The fact that he was relying on a Mudblood for anything was something they had latched onto and not let go.

Lucius' portrait had looked coldly at Draco, muttered "disgrace", "no son of mine" and various derogatory remarks regarding homosexuality, lack of family loyalty, and Mudblood scum before exiting and not returning. It was just as well, since his was one of the portraits that couldn’t be removed.

Once they had removed or covered the offending Malfoys’ images, Draco and Hermione had settled into a routine of sorts. They had spent the last two weeks at the Manor, only returning to the flat to sleep. As yet, they had found very little that would help. They had come across various potions that would enhance telekinetic ability, but moving objects around a room wasn’t the same as projecting your thoughts into another’s mind. Especially not another person who was who knows how far away.

The way Voldemort had implanted thoughts inside Harry’s head was exactly what they needed, but Harry and Voldemort had a connection. The only spell they knew of was Imperius. Not only was it illegal (which Draco didn’t much care about at the moment), but it still wasn’t what they needed. First, Harry could resist it. Second, it was something familiar to Harry, so even if they could do it, if he felt it wash over him, he might assume it was Ginny trying to control him, and shut down his mind completely, making their task that much more difficult. Finally, they didn’t know where Harry was or how to tap into his mind.

They had consulted Snape several times during their search. He seemed convinced that they would need both a potion to enhance Draco’s ability to project his thoughts, and a spell to gain access to Harry’s subconscious mind. Snape had been unyielding on that point. Harry, he had said, was far too powerful a wizard, and far too experienced with Voldemort’s deceptions to allow access to his waking mind. Their only hope was to gain access while Harry was asleep. They only hoped he was in the same time zone as they were.

Not knowing where he was physically made the task difficult, but not impossible. The essence of what was Harry existed on another plane, Snape explained, which should be accessible to someone close enough to his spirit. Snape was sure there was a spell that would aid in locating this part of Harry, and there was no one closer to him than Draco. Unfortunately, most of Snape’s contacts that would have known about such a spell were Death Eaters, and thus would not be forthcoming with information.

On the sixteenth day, Snape had contacted them with a name, and they searched for a book by a wizard named Mire Callidus, who had lived in the sixteenth century. Hermione and Draco didn’t stop looking until they had found two tomes by this author. Both were in a language neither of them was familiar with, but Hermione knew enough translation spells to convert them into roughly being, Making One‘s Fortune the Easy Way and Accessing The Unconscious Mind.

They took both books back to the flat with them, along with several as yet unread potions tomes, anxious to find the spell, but wanting to work in the comfort of the flat. Draco, being the stronger of the two at potions, agreed to continue searching those texts, while Hermione took on the laborious task of translating Accessing the Unconscious Mind page by page, to find the spell. Apparently, tables of contents and indexes had not been popular in the sixteenth century.

Draco awoke to Hermione’s scream, “I’ve found it!”

“Are you sure?” Draco asked, shaking off the haze of sleep.

“Well, see for yourself. It’s right here.”

He read the description of the spell:

Attero Praesentia

This spell weakens the mind of the person it is cast upon, making it easier to access the subconscious and implant one’s own ideas. While frowned upon in most countries, this spell has been known to enable Healers to draw patients out of states of mind heretofore considered irreversible.

The caster must be able to locate the subject’s magical essence in order to effectively cast the spell (see Invenio Animus). When the subject is close at hand, any skilled witch or wizard should be able to do this. However, at a distance, only those closest to the subject’s spirit will be able to succeed.

Caution must be exercised, however, as the weakened state of mind is not limited to the caster of the spell. Once the mind is weakened, anyone may implant ideas in the unsuspecting mind. It is therefore recommended that the caster master the counter-spell (see Expedio Praesentia) before attempting. The more commonly used Finite Incantatum is not effective at a distance, and is therefore not recommended.

“This sounds dangerous,” Hermione said.

“It’s dark magic. Of course it’s dangerous. But what choice do we have?”

“Well, you’d better get working on learning the spell. I can keep looking for the potion that will strengthen your mind.”

“In the morning, okay? I can barely keep my eyes open as it is. We can contact Severus to let him know we found it, make sure it’s the spell he was thinking of, and come up with the potion then.”

“Or maybe he has his own idea of a potion that might work.”

“Good point,” Draco agreed. “Hermione?”

“Yes?”

“We’re going to get him back, right?”

“Yes, Draco, we’re going to get him back.” She drew him into an embrace, and he felt himself weaken under it. He was so tired. So very tired. How was he ever going to pull this off?

Author’s Note: In Latin, the spell Invenio Animus means “find spirit“; Attero Praesentia, means “to weaken the presence of mind”; Expedio Praesentia means “to release the presence of mind.” The author‘s name, Mire Callidus means “wonderfully clever, skilful, cunning, sly.”

This is sooo good. The idea and explanation of the spell is fabulous, and I loved Narcissa's remark, followed by wink, to Hermione.

Harry should be back in Draco's arms in no time- with Severus, Hermione, and Draco working together to get him there.

Great chapter.

Thanks so much. Yes, go Narcissa for welcoming Hermione! She is, after all, a mother. She wants what's best for her son -- in this case, Harry. And Hermione comes with the package, so she welcomed her.

Let's hope they're together soon.

Ooooo...good one! You were right about the slow part but it was very intriguing.

Thank you. ♥

The next chapter will move the plot along a little more. The slow progression is indicative of the slow progress they are making, while Draco is desperate to have Harry back.

Hopefully the next update will be in a week or so.

Hm... why do I have a very bad feeling about this spell. If they weaken Harry's mind, what if Ginny gets to him first and implants her thoughts. *wibbles* You wouldn't do that, right? *whimpers*

Oh, do I know what you mean. I haven't updated in so long, it hurts me to think about it. This baby has stolen my muse...and even my two year old couldn't do that. I swore I'd finish the WIPs before I give birth...only 17 weeks to go. I'd better get writing. *winces*

If I could pay you to write, I would. *winks* Then again, I'd have to pay me first! *laughs*

Cheers.

I've been thinking of this story lately, wondering if I missed the conclusion, and contemplating searching the community for whatever I missed. I'm so relieved to see that that wasn't the case and was goofily excited about an update. I really really enjoy this story, poor Draco.

Yeah ... I knew it had been a while (hds_beltane and hd_holidays took over), but only when I went to update did I realize it had been A MONTH! Eep!

I shall try to update it weekly from now on.

You know, even though it was Harry that was taken, Draco certainly is suffering too, isn't he?

Oh yay! There is hope yet! :D *happy dance*

Very clever spell you've created there, especially your incorporation of the Latin derivatives (as Rowling does). :)

Your Narcissa was delightful here, I adored how she subverted both Draco and Hermione's expectations of her prejudice. *pleased*

It's great to see your updating this fic again, and I can't wait to see if the spell works or not. *crosses fingers*

Thanks. I like research, so the Latin was fun, too.

And I like to see Narcissa as her own woman when Lucius is out of the picture.

I shall try to update in about a week this time.

i'm enjoying this a lot, but i am also starting to long rather desperately for an explanation of why they can't send a Patronus. or an owl, even.

Date: 2007-07-24 01:51 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] sesheta-66.livejournal.com
Same reason neither works for the Ministry when searching for fugitives, I suppose. I picture the wards working as a shield to hide their magical signatures. I'm not sure how sending a Patronus works, but I imagine you need to know where to send it. An owl can find the magical signature of someone who wants to be found (e.g. Sirius was fine receiving owls from Harry, but I imagine he did something to prevent Ministry owls, which would be tracked, from getting to him).

Ginny is exceptionally bright, and knows about Sirius, so she'd know how to prevent that type of communication from working. At least that's what I envisioned.

Hope that helps. It's something I often wondered about fugitives ... why not send an owl & follow it?
