Ron blinked with amazement as he read the letter that Harry wrote. "You're writing to the ferret?"
"It seemed safer that way."
"Safer? You're not afraid he'd do something?"
"Not really. It's just ... given our past, I thought it best we keep our distance."
"So why bother talking to him at all?"
"At first, I felt bad that so many of his friends either died or ..."
"Were on You-Know-Who's side?"
"Yeah."
"And now?"
"Now ... I guess I think he's worth it. Just trust me, Ron, he is."
Ron looked at his best friend warily. "I trust you."
Draco blinked rapidly, sure he had misread the name on the parchment in front of him.
Malfoy,
Harry tells me that the two of you are writing to each other now. He says you've changed, that you deserve another chance, that you were a victim as much as anyone else. I may not be convinced that you're now the poster boy for the Light, but I trust Harry.
Amazing as this may sound, if Harry thinks you're worth it, who am I to disagree?
Ron Weasley
P.S. Just so we're clear, if you hurt Harry, I'll hex off your bollocks.
Draco wasn't sure how to respond to that. First of all, the letters he wrote to Harry weren't for anyone else to read. He was somewhat irritated that Harry would have shared them with the weasel. But more amazing had been Weaselbee's response. Was he offering Draco his friendship?
He thought back to their years at Hogwarts and their families' history. While the intensity of their confrontations had never been as deep as those with Harry, they were no more pleasant. He blinked his eyes into focus, returning to the present.
And what did he mean, 'if you hurt Harry'?
Weasley,
Imagine my amazement at receiving a letter from you, of all people. And no accompanying poison. Impressive, I must admit.
It's strange how, in the blink of an eye, one's life changes completely. Given our history, I don't know if we could ever be friends, but at the very least, one less enemy is a good thing.
I have to say that I am not sure what you meant by your obscure post-script. Much as I would be amused to see you attempt to hex off my bollocks, I assure you I have no intention of hurting Harry.

Ron had read the letter from Malfoy half a dozen times. The man had no clue, did he? As he pictured the look on the ferret's face when he found out ... oh, it was too much! It was amazing how clueless people could be. Then again, he was pretty sure Harry didn't even realize it himself.
Blinking back tears of amusement, Ron considered how absolutely perfect for each other the two of them were.
Strange as the situation was, he wanted Harry to be happy. And if that meant getting together with the ferret, he was all for it.
Harry,
Imagine how utterly shocked I was to receive correspondence from, of all people, Weaselbee. Yes, that's right - the weasel wrote to me.
And imagine my surprise that you had shared our letters with him. I had thought that they were private. I suppose it just amazes me to know that people are willing to share such things with their friends. I will have to get used to that, I expect. After all, I think he offered to be my friend. Go on, blink and read that part again. You may want to confirm the details with him.
Draco
Draco,
Ron wrote to you? And he offered to be your friend? I had to laugh at your comment, because I took off my glasses, tried to blink away whatever was messing with my vision, then read it again. I will talk to him, but just so you know, if he said it, he meant it. Amazing what a little thing like war can do, isn't it?
Anyway, I didn't share our letters with him. I consider them private too. He saw one on my desk that wasn't finished, so I told him we'd been writing to each other.
Harry
Draco read Harry's letter and smiled. It was silly, really, that he had been upset about him sharing their letters with the weasel. It's not as though there was anything really private in them. It's just ...
He frowned as he tried to think of just what had bothered him. Then it came to him. Like he'd said to Weaselbee, it's strange how, in the blink of an eye, one's life can change. It was amazing to him just how important those letters were to him. How important Harry was to him.
Oh, God! Suddenly, Ron's post-script was crystal clear.

Date: 2007-10-17 11:16 pm (UTC)I love these letters.
Am I missing something, or is there no part 3? I can't find it (I went back to reread from the beginning, and can only find parts 1 and 2).
I love that Ron can see what the boys cannot.

Date: 2007-10-17 11:31 pm (UTC)I knew I was writing part 4, so I didn't bother posting part 3 when I was posting a bunch of other stuff and flooding f-lists already ... but then I did part 4 before part 3 and ... ugh! Too confusing.
As always, thanks for commenting. And I suspect

Date: 2007-10-18 01:30 am (UTC)Eep! I've been rather busy, actually. *grins*
I have been terrible about keeping up with my f-list myself. I had to decide NOT to read any WiPs (except those I beta, obviously), because I just couldn't keep up.
I've got a half-mile long list of fics "to be read" as well, because I started bookmarking them to read later on.

Date: 2007-10-18 01:00 pm (UTC)Heh. We'll see how it works out with Ron's assistance. So far, he's been helpful. At least Draco figured it out. Now Harry ... he might need to be beaten over the head, but eventually ...
