Harry and Draco were visiting Ron and Hermione, who were currently house-sitting for Hermione's Canadian cousin in a Muggle town near Toronto. It was Hallowe'en, and they were out with Ron & Hermione's three-year-old twins on their trick-or-treating rounds. They thought it would be fun to experience it here, since they were told the neighbours got right into the event.
"Harry, would you relax already?!" Hermione admonished.
"But he's home alone!" Harry whined.
"Harry, he's thirty two years old. I'm sure he's fine for a couple hours without you."
"But --"
"Ron, would you tell him?" Hermione nudged her husband.
"I dunno, Hermione. I think Harry has a point," Ron said. "We are talking about the ferret."
The concern was that Draco was back at the house, handing out candy to neighbourhood children. Both Ron and Hermione had wanted to go with their children, since they wouldn't experience this again, and the twins had begged Uncle Harry to join them. Draco was pleased to accommodate, and offered to dole out goodies. Harry suspected that he might just eat more than he would give away.
"What could he possibly do, Harry?" Hermione asked.
"I'm almost too afraid to imagine the possibilities."
It wasn't long before Harry found out exactly what Draco could - and would do. Harry, a sinking feeling in the pit of his stomach, approached the house that had a huge crowd of children gathered round the garage. Hermione's cousin's garage. The garage where Draco stood inside. His heart skipped a beat as he heard a child's scream coming from the crowd.
Harry walked very quickly towards the garage, trying not to cause too much commotion. It turned out the scream he had heard was of delight. The sight that met his eyes stopped him dead in his tracks.
Draco was levitating a Muggle child in the air for all to see! When Draco's eyes met Harry's, his excitement faded fast. He slowly let the child down, then announced, "Well, that's it for tonight!" The boys and girls groaned with disappointment, almost as loudly as they had squealed with amazement.
Later that night ...
"But I couldn't just let it go," Draco explained.
"Yes, you could," Harry growled for the hundredth time, he was sure.
"But the children wouldn't stop talking about it."
"You performed magic right in front of Muggles!"
"But the other man did too!" he pouted.
"No, he didn't. What did you say he did? Ah, yes, he 'performed parlour tricks and passed them off as magic'."
"Well he did!" Draco said incredulously. "It was outrageous! And they all believed it."
"That doesn't mean you had to do something about it!"
"But Haaaa-ry!"
Tired of an argument he knew could go on for hours, Harry shut Draco up the best way he knew how, by tackling him to the bed, and snogging him for all it was worth.
When they came up for air, Draco asked, "So, are we coming back to Canada again next year?"

A/N: There's a magician in our neighbourhood who puts on a show for the children (and many adults) every Hallowe'en. I shamelessly used that as the premise for this story.

Date: 2007-10-16 04:07 am (UTC)Heheh, I love how Draco just needed to outshine the Muggle man, but at least he had the grace to look guilty. *g*
This was a really cute read, thanks for all the giggles! ;D

Date: 2007-10-16 04:20 am (UTC)You know, it really is fun to see all the neighbourhood kids and parents gathered around at the one house, watching a magic act (he's a professional magician). And everyone talks about it all night ... first in anticipation, then in delight.
I just love getting dressed up, whether it's for work, for walking around with my kids when they were little (they'd kill me if I tried now), or just to hand out goodies. Last year (I'm such a dork) I sat out on my porch with my laptop, passing time in between visits from kids. Thank goodness it was warm enough. My boys like to dole out to the little ones too - some of them are sooo cute!
Our neighbourhood is a bit freakish. We are all WAY more into Hallowe'en than Christmas. You should see the decorations! Though the last couple of years haven't been as adventurous.

Actually, I think my neighbourhood is a little over the top. Muahaha! Suits me just fine.
Though there are a lot of us out there, usually it's not so concentrated. *g* Like I'm the ONLY one in my office (er ... former office) that would dress up. And there are some that dress up as princesses and Disney characters. I just go for the darker side. Heh.

I like this. :D Draco’s actions amused me muchly and made me lol!
One little pet peeve though – we do trick or treat in the UK (also called ‘guising’ in Scotland). I don’t know whether you’d want to change the fic or not but I thought, if you did, you could perhaps adapt it to trick or treating wasn’t a UK ‘wizarding’ tradition (which would account for Ron and Draco never having done it, and I very much doubt Harry would have been allowed). As far as I know, we don’t usually have street magicians and the like over here though. :-S
Anyway, I do like this. Very cute ficlet. :D Hope you don’t mind me brit-picking…*worries*

Date: 2007-10-16 11:38 am (UTC)Brit-pic away m'dear. Never a problem. Especially something this obvious. :) *snuggles you so you stop worrying*
As for the street magician, he's the only one I've ever seen here ... our neighbourhood lucked out.
no subject
Date: 2007-10-16 09:11 pm (UTC)M'glad you're ok with it, and don't worry at all, we're so small but have a stupid amount of different practices from place to place. It's kind of difficult to say what's the 'norm'. :)
I have a hard time stopping myself but I try not to be totally nazi about it. Mostly because I've always thought it's bloody difficult to write about a place you may not have lived for an extended period of time (something I've very recently realised I was actually right about! Co-writing a non-HP fic with US characters = f**king difficult. Heh, we have an anti-brit-picker so I'm happy)
I think your neighbourhood did indeed luck out. I'd always though halloween sounded more fun over the pond anyway...but then I find out you have street magicians too!! *pouts* Erm....we have people that toilet paper cars....? :p Perhaps not quite as much wholesome fun...
Sorry for rambling, my brain stopped functioning when I left work today. *hopes it reboots itself tomorrow*
Very enjoyable ficlet though, thanks for sharing. Apart from making me worry about random brit-picking, it really perked up my day to read it.

Date: 2007-10-16 01:11 pm (UTC)Harry fretting about what damage Draco could do "home alone"... I'm almost too afraid to imagine the possibilities. Not sure if he could have imagined the truth!
And I could so vividly see Draco's "uh-oh-busted!" face when he sees Harry watching him levitate a kid! But of course there's no way Draco could resist a one-upmanship competition with a muggle magician! I mean, seriously! All those kids admiring silly parlor tricks!
Highly entertaining little fic!
