"Would the accused please rise?"

Draco took a deep breath and stood, steeling himself. He had chosen the losing side. Well, it was chosen for him, but still ...

He had accepted his own role in the nightmare that his and so many others' lives had become. Now he was facing his future, head held high, because he would take responsibility for his actions like a man.

Naturally, he hoped that he wouldn't spend the rest of his days in chains, locked away, never to amount to anything.

He shivered at that thought as he turned to face the Wizengamot.

"Draco Malfoy."

Draco's stomach clenched. This is bad. He isn't looking at me.

For the first time in his life, Draco wished that Potter would succeed. Perpetual thorn in Draco's side, Potter had testified on his behalf. Shock didn't begin to describe Draco's reaction.

"After carefully considering the facts and testimony provided in this case, we've come to a decision. Your actions were ill-advised at best. However, given the circumstances with which you were faced, it is the view of this court that incarceration would not serve justice. You are sentenced to five years' probation."

"You are free to go."
