A few days before the wedding, Harry went out with Hermione and Ron to see the castle and cathedral in Carlisle. The castle was a mixture of old and new, including the medieval fortress itself with its many chambers and dungeons, as well as a museum with military artefacts from the two world wars, and army barracks on the site. Stationed near the border between England and Scotland, Carlisle had seen many battles and changing of hands over the years. The Romans, Vikings, Scottish and English had all fought over this small but strategically located city.
The cathedral, small by British standards, was beautiful, with its origins in the 1100s, with updates and finishing touches made through the 1400s. Some of the stained glass was even more recent than that. It was the perfect setting for the wedding. Luna had chosen well.
As they walked around, Harry had the opportunity to observe his two friends and how they interacted. Despite their bickering, which he had experienced ever since their early days at Hogwarts, it was obvious that they truly loved each other. They expressed their love with every look, every gesture, every touch. They had a familiarity that was a mix of friendship and romance, respect and love. There was intimacy even in a simple touch of hand to shoulder.
Harry tried not to be envious, but it was difficult. He had no one - no family, no special someone to call his own. He thought he might have had that once, but ...
Of course, he was around other couples, Ron's family, and a host of other people who had gone on with their lives … without him. Clearly everyone was doing just fine, thank you very much, and didn't need Harry there. Well, what had he expected, really? That everyone would be anxiously awaiting his return? That they would refrain from moving on with their lives, just as Harry had done?
His longing for Draco grew as each day passed, yet he said nothing. He didn't ask about him, perhaps because he was afraid to hear that Draco too was doing oh-so-well without the interference of one Harry James Potter. He told himself that it was better this way. If he were to ask about Draco, it would only raise questions, and he didn't want to risk giving his feelings away. Not when he had no idea what Draco felt for him now, or even what he had felt for Harry back then. Some things were best left unsaid.
By the time the wedding rolled around, Harry couldn't wait to go back home. Back to where he didn't think about everything that he didn't have. Back where he could get on with his future without dwelling on his past.
Back where he could leave everything and everyone behind.
