1. The Plan

Harry was back at Hogwarts after a one-year closure. Headmistress McGonagall had decided to do what Dumbledore had wanted and the Sorting Hat had preached. She was taking down the barriers between houses, if only a little bit at a time.

One of her plans involved each year’s students answering one question. The seventh-years’ question was: "How did you feel about leaving home to come to Hogwarts?"

"Hand it in to me directly tomorrow. Your papers will then be presented anonymously to the group in one week’s time. This will hopefully help you get to know your fellow students better."

2. Draco’s Decision

Draco found himself worried about what he would write. He was so used to putting on a front of self-confidence at school, that the freedom he now experienced was foreign to him. His father had been killed during the war, so he didn’t have to fear retribution if word got back to him. But still …

Did he trust these people? He had never trusted anyone in his lifetime, except maybe his mother, and there were times he hadn’t even trusted her. Now he was supposed to expose his feelings in front of everyone. Oh, what the hell. Why not?

3. Harry’s History

Harry wasn’t sure what to write. He had finally got past the ridicule he had experienced, for one reason or another, over the years. And he had killed Voldemort not long ago. But now he was expected to go back to a time when he was a frightened 11-year-old boy, not knowing what to expect.

"We have to be honest," Hermione announced to anyone that would listen. "After all, what’s the point otherwise? I mean, the whole purpose is to get to know one another, and how can we do that if we aren’t completely truthful?"

She had a point.

4. A Kindred Spirit

True to her word, McGonagall had posted all of the essays on the board in the classroom. There were no names, and they had all been changed so that handwriting was indistinguishable. All of them were numbered, and they each had corresponding papers to fill in, the objective to guess as many as possible based on what you thought you knew about your classmates.

Draco found some easy, and others more difficult. One in particular stood out from the rest, as it sounded so much like his own. It had only seven words:

"Finally I had a way to escape."

5. A Lot Like Me

Harry had no idea how difficult this would be. So many were similar that it was hard to distinguish them. There were ones that said "scared" for one reason or another. Some said, "excited" while others said "sad" because they were leaving their parents, siblings, home.

One, however, drew his attention. It was short, just like his. And it sent shivers down his spine as he read it. The words were almost the same as his own:

"I couldn’t wait to get out."

He wondered who else had had such a horrible childhood that they couldn’t wait to get away.

6. A Fresh Start

When McGonagall revealed that Harry and Draco were the two who had viewed Hogwarts as an escape, nobody was more surprised than them.

Draco knew that Harry’s parents were killed when he was one, and that he had been raised by muggles. But his father had always told him how spoiled Harry had been.

Harry knew what a jerk Lucius Malfoy was, but he never really thought about how intimidating he must have been as a father. He visibly shuddered at the thought.

"Potter."

"Malfoy."

"Shall we go for a walk?"

"Sure."

And that is how it all began …
