Title: Cheesecake
Author: [livejournal.com profile] sesheta_66
Rating: PG-13
Word Count: ~ 1380
Pairing/Characters: Harry/Draco, Hermione
Challenge: Written for [livejournal.com profile] enchanted_jae's birthday, her prompt was "Cheesecake. Specifically, since Draco's birthday is also in June, have Harry offer to bake him a cake for his birthday, and then have Draco request cheesecake. Definite fluff." It also fits nicely into my GJ 100_claims prompt of 087 - Overwhelmed.
Warnings: Serious fluff. No beta. Please point out any errors you find.
Summary: Harry attempts to bake a cheesecake for Draco's birthday, but it isn't as easy as he thought.

"A-choo!" Harry sneezed as he inhaled some of the flour floating around the kitchen.

"Shit!" he swore, wondering where all the white powder had come from. He could have sworn it all went into the bowl, but apparently not. He surveyed the wreckage formerly known as their kitchen and let out a groan. Who knew baking a cake could be this difficult?

Finding himself overwhelmed, he cursed Draco for wanting cheesecake for his birthday. Harry's demanding boyfriend couldn't possibly want something as ordinary as a chocolate or vanilla cake … nooooooo. He had to have the most cumbersome cake to make ever; Harry was convinced it had to be. Of course, it was his own fault for offering to make it from scratch, himself, with no help.

On the stove were three pots of toppings simmering - blueberry, strawberry and cherry, as requested. Well, Harry had to admit that Draco hadn't asked for all three; he had said that those were his favourites, and that Harry could decide which to prepare. Unable to choose, and fearful of Draco saying, "Oh, I thought you would have made this instead of that," Harry decided to make all three, just to be sure. It turned out that those were far easier to make than the cake itself.

Harry had wanted to make Draco's birthday perfect, cake and all. That was before he had spent hours trying to get things just right. Now he would just be thankful to have the cake done with, so they could get on with the meal and … well, whatever came afterwards. Harry suppressed a grin, trying to focus on the task at hand.

As he waved his wand to begin cleaning up the disaster, the phone rang and his concentration was lost, causing the large and very heavy mixing bowl to come crashing down on the stove. "Shit!"

"Hello," he barked into the phone.

"Hi, Harry!" came Hermione's oh-so-chipper voice.

"Shit, 'Mione, could you have called at a worse time?"

"Um … sorry?"

"No, I’m sorry. It's not your fault. I'm just trying to make Draco a cheesecake for his birthday, the place is a disaster, I was just cleaning up, and the phone ringing caused the bowl to crash down on the stove."

"Oh. Did the cake fall?"

"What do you mean … fall?"

"Fall. You know, when you're baking you need to be careful that you don't disturb the cake or it can flop."

Harry's stomach flopped. "Flop?"

"Um … yeah … flop."

Sure enough, when Harry looked in the oven, the centre of the cake, that minutes ago had been rising, had flopped down. "Fuck!" he screamed. "I've got to go, 'Mione," he said into the receiver and hung up on her.

"Fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck!" he yelled at no one, then sat himself on the couch, burying his face in his hands, wondering what he was going to do now. That was how Hermione found him as she entered through the Floo.

"Oh, Harry," she tried to console him as she took in the mess of the kitchen, of Harry, and finally of the cake. A quick few waves of her wand later, much of the mess had been cleaned up, and the dishes were busily being washed in the sink.

"Now, about this cake," she began.

"It's ruined," moaned Harry. "It's a total disaster. All I wanted was to make everything perfect for Draco's birthday, and I can't even bake a simple cake."

"Um … Harry … a cheesecake is hardly what I'd call simple to bake. In fact, it's probably the hardest kind I've ever made. That's why I always buy cheesecakes myself."

"It figures," Harry grumbled. "Now what do I do?"

"Maybe you could check the internet for a quick recipe that you can start with now," Hermione suggested. Even as the words left her mouth, the look of defeat and exhaustion on Harry's face told her that he wasn't in any state to start all over again.

She tried another angle, looking over at the stovetop. "Well, you have three different toppings made, and they're just fine, right?"

"Mm-hmm."

"Well, let's wait for the cake to finish baking, and we'll see if we can salvage it, maybe make a batch of mini-cakes out of it, and Draco will never be the wiser."

Harry looked up hopefully. "Really? You think that'll work?"

"Sure. Why wouldn't it?"

Harry, despite wanting to do everything himself, had agreed to let Hermione help with the clean up and set the dining table while he cut up the cake. He absolutely wanted the cake - or cakes - to have been made completely by him. As soon as the place was presentable again, and the table had been set, Harry sent Hermione on her way, thanking her for her help.

Looking at the house and the mini cakes, Harry felt much better about things. With Hermione's help, he was done with a few hours to spare before Draco was due home. Recalling what Hermione had said about a quick recipe, he thought that perhaps he could make a normal-sized cheesecake too. After all, he had lots of toppings left.

He went onto the internet, and typed in "cheesecake" as his search criteria. Much to his dismay, he received far too many hits to bother going through. It would have taken him the afternoon just to look at them all. Deciding that he'd rather go for something that looked fancy, he thought he'd flip through pictures of cheesecakes, and decide that way. This time he entered "cheesecake photo" as his search criteria. Clicking on one of the hyperlinks, Harry was met with a picture he hadn't been expecting. Grinning mischievously, he knew just what he would be making for his boyfriend.

When Draco arrived home, Harry greeted him with a slow, sumptuous kiss, then led him into the dining room where the table was set for a romantic meal for two, complete with low light and candles.

They enjoyed a leisurely supper, and as Harry was getting the coffee, Draco inquired about his cake.

"You know," Harry called from the kitchen, "you picked the hardest cake ever to make."

"I'm sorry, Harry," called Draco as he made his way into the kitchen, wrapped his arms around Harry's waist and snuggled in behind him, nuzzling his neck. "I had no idea. The house-elves always prepared everything, and you know them - they never complained that any one cake was more difficult than another. All I know is that cheesecake has always been my favourite."

Harry turned around, taking Draco in his arms and kissing his pouty boyfriend on the nose. "It's okay. Of course you wouldn't know. But you know what I'm like - I always want everything to be perfect, so I stressed myself out, then the phone rang, and the cake fell, and … well … it was a bit of a disaster actually," he finished sheepishly. "But don't worry. You still get cheesecake." He brought out the tray of bite-sized cakes he had prepared.

As Harry looked on hopefully, Draco popped one of the mini cakes into his mouth, closing his eyes. "Mmm … it's good."

Relieved, Harry smiled. "I'm so glad." Looking at Draco predatorily, he continued. "But just in case that cheesecake wasn't good enough, I put together another one."

Draco looked perplexed. "What?! After all that you baked another cake? Really, Harry, you didn‘t have to."

"Who said anything about baking?" Harry asked, handing Draco his birthday card. As Draco looked inside, his entire face lit up.

"That," announced Harry cheekily, "is a cheesecake photograph!"

"Of … you … wearing …" Draco stammered.

"Not much - I know!"

Draco looked at Harry with a lust-filled gaze, then pounced. He started kissing him, and tugging at his clothes. "So,” Harry giggled, “I take it you like that cheesecake?”

Draco nodded. “Only one problem, though.”

Harry frowned. “What’s that?” he asked.

“What topping do I put on this cheesecake?" he asked.

Harry waved his wand, and a procession of bowls containing the strawberry, cherry and blueberry toppings, followed by chocolate sauce and whipped cream made their way down the hall into the bedroom. "Any topping you wish, birthday boy. Any topping you wish."

*snickers* Oh, that was the cutest thing... you did a great job. When you told me about the prompt, I certainly didn't expect the "extra cheesecake." I love Harry flustered in the kitchen, he's so adorable.

"Ow!" *glares at Ron; pinches him back*

Anyway. Thanks for putting a grin on my face. Jae’s gonna love it.

lol So cute! And the frustration Harry felt really spoke to me. I've had similar moments, so I really felt for him. But his decision at the end to give Draco another 'cheesecake'? Two thumbs up. :D

Yay! Glad you liked it. Actually, jae commented about her woes over baking cheesecake, which is where her prompt came from ... so I was inspired. I, on the other hand, just EAT cheesecake ... or *horrors* buy the quick-mix stuff. *nods*

Oooh, this is delicious! I know where Harry is coming from--I've baked cheesecakes before, and I put a lot of stressing and swearing into the final product. They've always turned out tasty, though. Thanks for the yummy fic! Love it!

But- but cheesecake's one of the easiest cakes to make! There are even versions that don't involve ovens! And you don't bake cheesecake with flour, either! *is very confused* Hard cakes would be tiramisu or Baked Alaska or merengue.

Cute, outside of the cheesecake objections.

Hmmm ... never having attempted it myself, I wouldn't know. I've only ever done the mix. I had it under advisement that it was very difficult to make, so that's how I wrote the fic.

Glad you liked, despite the objections.

Cheesecake is: graham cracker crumbs (digestive biscuits if you're a Brit) mixed with butter or something, laid down for crust, then for the filling it's cream cheese and sugar. And milk, maybe? Did the person advising you by any chance happen to be male? :-)

Nope. Female who bakes a lot. I suspect you've perhaps described the more basic type. I know for sure it wasn't that easy when my mom baked cheesecakes.

Oh, forgot to mention ... the one recipe I looked up (New York Style cheesecake) did have flour, although not much, so that's what I used as the premise.

Cheesecake isn't, technically, a cake, but a custard pie. Since it doesn't rise (no leavening agents), it can't fall or flop. :) In fact, the only cake that MIGHT be prone to falling would be an angel-food cake. The classic dish that one fears collapsing in the oven is a soufflé.

From: [identity profile] sesheta-66.livejournal.com
Well, since I don't bake (if I did, I'd definitely eat, because I have a HUGE sweet tooth ... and I don't want that) and I had a "problems baking cheesecake" prompt, I went with it.

Ah, well ... live & learn.

Funny, but I have seen cheesecakes that look like they "flopped" in the middle, with the centre sagging considerably.

... That's where the thought came from, actually.
