Draco awoke to the sound of banging and clattering, coupled with the occasional choice expletive from Harry.
Resigned to the fact that he wouldn't be getting any more sleep until a probably drunk Harry had a cup of tea, and hopefully was sleeping soundly, Draco dragged himself out of bed and into the kitchen.
Expecting to find Harry inebriated with all the noise he was making, Draco was surprised to see Harry standing at the kitchen counter staring out the window, knuckles white from gripping the counter.
"Harry," Draco said sleepily.
Harry jumped. "Fuck, Draco! You scared me."
"Sorry."
"Whatever." He resumed staring out the window.
"Come to bed, Harry."
"No. I don't think so."
"Suit yourself," Draco said, too tired and too upset himself to delve any deeper into conversation. He turned to leave but was stopped by Harry's words.
"So you're really going to do it, then? You're going to cancel the wedding tomorrow?"
"Yes."
"So what then?"
"I don't know."
"Haven't you thought about it? About what this means to us?"
"I've been trying not to."
"That figures."
That was it. Something inside Draco snapped at that, and all the pent-up anger he had been feeling boiled to the surface. "Well, isn't that rich, Potter?! You're the one who suggested that we call off the wedding in the first place! You finally realized you'd made a rash decision proposing to me, so you jumped at the opening to get out of it!"
"What?! I only suggested it because you were getting moodier by the day. You were cranky at first, but then … I don't know … it was like you were getting depressed, like you were so unhappy with life and … " He stopped to take a calming breath. "And when I asked you what was wrong, you said ‘the wedding.' That explained a lot."
"Well --" Draco began to explain.
"Oh no, Malfoy. Here's the thing. I have never seen you so miserable in my life. I want to marry you - more than anything in the world, actually - but not if the mere thought is enough to plummet you into a state of depression. So I gave you an out. Because, believe it or not Draco, I care about your happiness more than I do my own."
"Harry, it wasn't the idea of being married that got to me. It was … " He wasn't so sure that he wanted to tell Harry about Ginny's threat, even now.
"Well, spit it out then. What was it?"
"It was Ginny, alright?"
"Ginny? What's Ginny got to do with anything?"
"Well, she's never really liked me, but her hatred of me seems to have reached a new level, coming out in full force after we announced our engagement."
Harry looked shocked, but listened. By the time Draco was through explaining to Harry everything Ginny had said to him directly, and the overheard conversation, it was Harry who was angry. In fact, he was livid.
