Missed the start? Part 1 - A Kind Word

“I’ve called you all in here for a follow-up to last week’s task. Is there anyone here that was unable to complete the exercise, or that did not receive a note from someone?” Headmistress McGonagall looked out over the sea of faces, and was met with shaking heads and blank stares. “Very good,” she said, sounding pleased.

“Now, how did this make everyone feel?” she asked. A few of the girls raised their hands. “Parvati?”

“It made me feel good. I mean to say that it was good to hear -- or in this case read -- something nice about myself, without having to do anything to get the praise.”

“Miss Bulstrode?”

“It was different, in a good way. It was weird to have to say something nice about people I don’t really know -- and even for some of those that I do know. But once I started watching everybody, it got easier. Oh,” she added as an afterthought. “It was really nice to receive them too. It made me think that maybe people don’t hate me like I thought they did.”

McGonagall went around the room, eliciting responses from everyone, starting with those that volunteered, then making her way through all that met her eye. All in all, everyone had viewed it as a positive experience, one that for very little effort had given them insight into who their fellow classmates were, and a little bit about how they themselves were perceived. And everyone had felt good when they received the notes.

“Let me see. Who has not yet answered?”

Several voices could be heard calling ‘Draco’ or ‘Malfoy’ while others were saying ‘Harry’ or ‘Potter.’ Apparently they were the only two who hadn’t given their opinions as yet.

“Mr. Malfoy,” she prompted. Draco steeled himself, looking like he really had to mentally prepare for what he was about to say.

“It made me feel free.” He was met with puzzled looks from everyone except Harry, who could understand what he meant. “I felt free of the stigma of the Malfoy name, and the ‘Son of a Death Eater’ label. It seemed that people were forced to look past who they thought I was, to the person I really am.”

“When I was writing my notes, I was free to look at people without being concerned with the labels I had previously given them. It was almost like everything that went before was cast aside, if only for a week, and I was free of my life’s influences, and could just see clearly.”

Half the room was staring at Draco in utter disbelief. Harry, however, just smiled at him. Hermione, who had been watching Harry’s reaction to Draco’s words, was now watching the interaction between the two of them, casting a quizzical look towards Pansy Parkinson. Pansy still looked stunned at what Draco had said.

“Thank you, Mr. Malfoy,” said McGonagall in a softer tone than usual, and with an approving look at the Slytherin. “Now, Mr. Potter.”

Harry took a moment to collect his thoughts. “I felt a number of things. First I felt relief. Then it made me feel sad, but hopeful.” At the questioning looks he received, Harry continued. “I was relieved because nobody said anything about me defeating Voldemort. Everyone seemed to look past my actions and see me for a change. I suppose I’ve always been this person that had to do this ‘thing,’ and I was afraid that the real me might have been lost. So I was relieved to read that people see Harry -- just Harry.”

“As I was writing my notes, it made me sad. Maybe sad isn’t the right word. Anyway, I was discovering things about my classmates that I had never known before, because I was too busy, too preoccupied, or in some cases, too caught up in house rivalries to be inclined to find out about them. I didn’t think that reflected very well on me as a person. It also made me realize that I had missed out on the opportunity to get to know some really great people before now.”

“It also gave me a sense of hope, because there’s still time to get to know people, even if it is our last year here. I see this as a beginning, and I’m really glad that you gave us this exercise to do.”

Harry too was met with shocked looks, none more gobsmacked that Ron’s. Hermione, however, had managed to sidle over to Pansy’s side, and the two of them were looking intently at Draco and Harry. Draco was smiling at Harry, much the same way Harry had done after Draco had spoken.

“Thank you, Mr. Potter.”

“Well, everyone, I believe we can call this a success. I would like to continue this throughout the year. We shall meet once every week or two, when I shall set you a task, and we will discuss the results the next time we meet.”

There was rumbling around the room, but Harry sensed that no one minded these assignments.

“Very well, then, on to this week’s task. You are to select one of the notes you received, and explain what impact you feel it had or will have on you in your life. It does not have to be the one you liked the most, or the one that seemed the most profound, or the one from your best friend. Just make it one that you feel will have some impact on your life.”

Everyone got up to leave, and she added one more comment. “Now, this is not expressly a part of your assignment, but I would encourage you all to participate in some inter-house activities between now and our next meeting, which shall take place in one week’s time.”

“You heard what McGonagall said. ‘I encourage you all to participate in some inter-house activities’. This is an inter-house activity,” Draco declared to a dubious Harry.

“Riiiight. I’m sure consuming as much Firewhiskey as possible and participating in drunken party games was exactly what she had in mind,” Harry replied.

“What’s the matter, Potter -- scared?”

“Doesn’t that line ever get old?”

“Not when it works, it doesn’t. You are, if nothing else, predictably easy to manipulate that way.” Draco smiled, knowing that he had him. “Just round up some of your Gryffindork cronies, and meet us at the Room of Requirement at 8:00 tonight.”

“Fine,” Harry said as he rolled his eyes. “You know, I’m beginning to believe that being your friend isn’t always such a good thing.”

“Oh, you love me and you know it,” Draco replied with a dazzling smile and a wink. Then he was off towards the dungeons.

Harry was thankful for small miracles, as his cheeks reddened and he mumbled to himself, “You have no idea.”

Somehow it turned out that the Gryffindor contingent was larger than that of Slytherin. In all, there were six Slytherins -- Draco, Blaise, Crabbe, Goyle, Millicent and Pansy -- and eight Gryffindors -- Harry, Ron, Dean, Neville, Seamus, Hermione, Lavender and Parvati.

“Impressive, Potter. How did you manage to convince everyone?”

“I mentioned alcohol, and the entire boys’ dorm was in. As for the girls, Hermione seemed to think we might need supervision.” Harry rolled his eyes as he said that. “And she was apparently able to convince two others to chaperone the proceedings.”

“Chaperone?” Pansy burst out. “Surely you’re kidding!” she said to Hermione.

“Of course he’s kidding. We’re in,” said Lavender. Harry thought he caught Hermione glaring slightly at her, and he remembered back to Ron and Lavender’s snogging sessions back in sixth year.

“Right, so we’re going to start off with I Never,” said Millicent. “Everyone know the rules?” The Gryffindors looked back at her blankly. “New blood! Excellent.” She rubbed her hands together maniacally. “Here’s how it works. We sit in a circle, and we all take a turn. The first person says, ‘I never …’ and finishes the sentence with something. Then everyone around either takes a drink if they have done it, or doesn’t take a drink if they’ve never done it, including the person who said it.”

“But why would someone say they never did something that they did do, if it meant they had to drink something?” Hermione asked innocently. Even the Gryffindors laughed at that comment.

Seamus wrapped his arm around her shoulders and explained, in a fatherly tone, “Because, Hermione, the idea of the game is to get drunk.”

“Oh,” she said as her cheeks went pink.

“But not too drunk,” Pansy interjected. “You want the other people around you drunker than you.”

“So,” Millicent continued, “I could say that I never dated a Gryffindork, and then I wouldn’t have to take a drink. But if I said that I never dated a Slytherin, I would have to take a drink. Then it’s the next person’s turn. Everyone get it?” Her question was answered with a bunch of nods around the room. “Right, so it was my idea, so I’ll go first. Everyone in a circle, and we’ll begin.”

Everyone had a shot glass in front of them, filled with an amber liquid. At the look on Millicent’s face, Hermione decided to do a quick Detection Spell to determine that the contents were, in fact, the same in each glass, and that the liquid was Firewhiskey. Satisfied, she gave the nod to begin.

“I never sneak out of my dorm,” Millicent said, picking up her glass and downing it in one motion. Everyone but Lavender and Parvati also took a drink.

“I never cheat on tests or homework,” Hermione said, leaving her glass on the floor. Harry rolled his eyes, knowing that she was really planning to stay as sober as possible. Everyone else took a drink.

“I never use magic out of class,” said Goyle, taking a swig. Everyone followed suit.

“I’ve never lied to a teacher,” said Neville. Lavender and Parvati didn’t take any, but everyone else did.

“I’ve never lied to my family,” said Lavender. Once again, she and Parvati were the only ones that didn’t drink. Harry looked curiously at Hermione, wondering how many drinks it would take for her to get drunk, and what kind of a drunk she would make.

He was brought out of his musings by Crabbe’s voice. “I never lie to my friends,” the Slytherin said, and he, Goyle, and Millicent didn’t take a drink. They all eyed the Gryffindors as they did.

“What?” Ron asked. “We may be brave, but nobody said we were perfect.”

“Yeah, it’s not like we’re Hufflepuffs,” Seamus added.

“Let’s make this more interesting,” said Blaise. “I’ve never fantasized about doing it with someone in this room.” Everyone looked around the room, several blushed, but everyone took a drink. “Well,” he said, looking triumphant. “That has some potential.”

Seamus, not to be outdone by a Slytherin, said, “I never wanked to images of someone in this room.” All the boys picked up their drinks right away, as did Pansy and Millicent. Hermione and Lavender, though hesitant, followed suit.

Dean said, “I have never kissed another boy. Or for you girls, never kissed another girl.” He got a few looks at this statement, lifted his glass, then added, “with tongue.” Draco, Blaise, Millicent, Pansy, Seamus, Hermione and Harry all took a drink. The others looked on with a mixture of shock and bemusement.

Pansy said, “I never fantasized about having sex with another girl. For you boys, with another boy.” This narrowed things down further. Draco, Blaise, Pansy, Hermione, Dean and Harry took a drink.

Draco said, “I’ve never actually had sex with another boy … or for you girls, another girl.” Blaise, Pansy and Dean took a drink. “Very interesting,” Draco purred.

Parvati, blushing furiously, said, “I’ve never had sex.” She was the only one that didn’t take a drink.

Ron added, “I’ve never been caught having sex.” Blaise, Pansy, Goyle, Seamus and Dean took a drink.

Finally it was Harry’s turn. “I’ve never had sex in a public place,” he said. All the Slytherins, along with Harry, Seamus, Dean, and to his surprise Neville took a drink.

“Well,” Millicent said, “that was … enlightening, to say the least.” She was smiling, and slurring her words a little.

Pansy piped in, “I think we’d better call this game quits after one round, or else we’re all likely to be sick.

“Agreed,” said Millicent, who tried to get up, couldn’t quite get her footing, and flopped back down again. “Besides, I want to remember all of this. You know, store it away ‘for future reference’ and all that.”

“How about Truth or Dare?“ squeaked Neville. At the frightened look from Lavender and Parvati, he added, “After the game we just played, how bad could it be?”

The Slytherins all looked thrilled at the prospect, but most of the Gryffindors looked apprehensive. Well, all but a drunk Neville who had suggested it, Hermione for some reason, and Harry who smacked Neville on the back and said, “Great idea, Nev!” If Harry had thought about it, he probably would have realized that he too was drunk, and ideas that sounded fantastic when one was drunk rarely were.

The Slytherins presented the group with a diluted version of Veritaserum, something aimed at ensuring the truth. Hermione pointed out the illegality of it, and reminded everyone of the charm she had developed for the DA in fifth year, and her idea won out. They all signed their agreement to tell the truth when asked a direct question during the course of the game, knowing full well that “LIAR” would be clearly visible on their faces, should they try to lie when asked a question. As a little extra incentive, the word “WUSS” would appear if someone backed out of the game without answering his or her question, or completing his or her dare.

Neville, having chosen the game, started. “Parvati, truth or dare?“

“Truth.“

Harry nearly died of shock when Neville decided to carry on with the information they had just learned from the previous game, and he daringly (or stupidly, depending on how you look at things) asked Parvati, “So why have you never had sex before?”

To her credit, although she seemed uncomfortable with the question and subject matter, she was clear and confident with her answer. “I am waiting until I am married. It’s something that is very important to me, and I take it seriously.” To Harry’s astonishment and relief, everyone just nodded their understanding.

“My turn. Pansy, truth or dare?”

“Oh, I’ll start out with truth.”

“What do you think is the best characteristic of a Slytherin?”

Pansy beamed. “I’m glad you asked that. I think that Slytherins are many things, but where we excel is in the ‘smarts’ department.” At the look of ‘yeah right’ she received from Parvati, whose sister was in Ravenclaw, she continued. “I don’t mean book smarts like people in Ravenclaw. I mean street smarts. We take the information we learn, hear, or otherwise come by, and ‘store it away’ as Millie said. Then we draw from our store of information when it best suits us, and serves our best advantage. Now that is smart.”

The Slytherins around the room looked very pleased with Pansy’s answer, and even the Gryffindors were nodding their heads. They had to admit she was right.

“Right, then. Potter,” she said with a quick glance at Hermione. What was that about? “Truth or Dare?”

“Truth,” Harry said, figuring it was the lesser of two evils when Pansy was the one deciding his fate.

“Potter, you disappoint me,” she said with a mock pout on her face. “Choosing truth? What happened to the brave Gryffindor?” She sneered at him, but had a wicked glint in her eyes. Harry suddenly wasn’t so sure about this. “Not to worry. Remember that we Slytherins can recall ‘stored information’ when it best suits them. Do observe while I put my theory to the test.“

“As I recall, Potter, you said that you had fantasized about at least one person in this room.” Harry nodded. “And that you had wanked to images of at least one person in this room.” Harry nodded again. “And that, although you haven’t done it with another boy, you have fantasized about having sex with one.”

Harry’s nod this time was accompanied by a feeling of trepidation in his stomach, which must have shown on his face. “Ahh,” said Pansy. “I see that you may have made out where I’m going with this. So, Potter, is there one person in this room that fits all of those? All in one, neat, tidy package?”

Harry looked at the floor and mumbled, “Yes.”

“Sorry. I don’t think we heard you.”

He lifted his head up to glare at her, this time speaking clearly. “Yes.”

“Right, so who is it?” she asked quickly.

“On question, Parkinson. You used yours up,” Harry said, telling himself that he wouldn’t be choosing ‘truth’ again any time soon.

The game progressed, as the next few people chose ‘truth’ as their first option. Dean had admitted fantasizing about Seamus, Seamus had wanked to images of Lavender, Blaise had had his first sexual experience with a boy that had visited from Durmstrang in their fourth year. Much to Hermione’s dismay, it was revealed that Ron had not been her first. Millicent and Crabbe had revealed that they had been each other’s first, and that they had done it under the stands at the Quidditch pitch.

To everyone’s surprise, Neville and Lavender had been each other’s first, but even more surprising was that it had been in the Gryffindor common room under Harry’s invisibility cloak. Harry made a mental note to cast a Scourgify on it later.

Draco had been questioned by Hermione in much the same way as Harry had been by Pansy. In the end, she had made a similar mistake, having asked, “Will you tell us who the mystery man is?”

Draco had merely smiled, and said, “If someone asks me directly, as my question during the course of this game, I will.” She proceeded to ask, but he pointed out that she had already asked her question. Pleased with himself, he turned to Pansy. “Pans, who is your current fantasy wank?”

“No one in particular right now. Just some wizard in Quidditch robes.”

So, it was back to Pansy. She flashed a look at Hermione -- again Harry wondered what was going on between those two -- then she cast a shit-eating grin Harry’s way. “Alright, Potter. Back to you. Truth or Dare?”

“Dare,” he replied without hesitation. He wasn’t risking ‘truth’ again, since he already knew what she was going to ask him, and he wasn‘t quite ready to deal with the repercussions of his answer. Pansy turned to Hermione and winked, before turning back to Harry.

“Well, well, Potter, this is about to get very interesting. Your dare is to kiss your fantasy wank man who is in this room.”

Harry’s jaw dropped and his heart skipped a beat before starting to pound so furiously that he wouldn’t be surprised if everyone in the room could hear it. Then he let out a groan that he knew everyone could hear.

“Oh, come now Potter. Don’t tell me that you are afraid to kiss someone?”

Harry shook his head. He wasn’t afraid to kiss him. He was just afraid of what that kiss implied, what it revealed. He also would prefer not to do this in front of everyone, but there was nothing else for it.

“Harry, you fought Voldemort and won,” Neville pointed out. “You can’t be afraid of a kiss.”

Harry noticed Pansy and Hermione huddled together, exchanging looks and talking animatedly, as though they were best mates. When had that happened? Harry glared at them suspiciously, but they just looked directly at him, eyebrows raised, matching looks on their faces that urged him to get on with it. He had the feeling that they suspected something. Taking a deep breath, Harry got up.

“Oh, Potter,” Pansy said. “That would be with tongue, and for one full minute.” She and Hermione were enjoying this. Harry desperately wanted to come up with something wicked for Pansy, but he couldn’t think straight. Well, he really had no choice. He closed his eyes, took a deep breath, and made his way over to stop directly in front of Draco, whose eyes were wide with shock.

Harry held out his hand, and pulled Draco into a standing position. Whispering a quick, “Sorry,” Harry leaned in to kiss the blonde. Somewhere in the distance, he knew there were gasps and exclamations, but he couldn’t hear anything. All he could focus on was Draco. If this ruined the friendship that had just started, he wasn’t going to waste the moment. He was going to enjoy this one minute for all it was worth.

He breathed in Draco’s scent as he had leaned in, and ran his hands through his silky blonde hair, as he had wanted to do so many times before this. His hand resting on the back of Draco’s neck, he pulled the Slytherin’s mouth towards his own.

When their lips connected, Harry was surprised at how soft the other boy’s were. Soft and sweet. As Harry ran his tongue around Draco’s lips, they opened in invitation. He let out a soft moan, as his tongue sought out Draco’s. He could feel Draco’s arms come around him, one hand lacing its fingers through his hair. Harry pulled Draco’s body towards him as he deepened the kiss.

Draco tasted wonderful, better than Harry had imagined. Their tongues circled each other’s, exploring and tasting and teasing, and Harry’s entire body was tingling with desire. His body which was deliciously pressed up against Draco’s. His body which was reacting --

Somewhere in the background he heard, “Okay, that‘s a minute.” They ignored it.

“Time’s up.” They ignored that too.

“Oi, Harry!” That was Ron. “Enough already!”

The two boys drew apart, but only just. Harry’s eyes fluttered open, and he took in the flushed face of Draco. He looked just as turned on as Harry felt, and that look was sexy as hell.

“I’m not, you know,” Draco said. Harry gave him a confused look. “Sorry,” Draco explained. “I’m not sorry at all,” he repeated, smiling. Then he pulled Harry in for another kiss.

It's always an extra compliment when someone likes what I wrote despite not generally liking that premise, so thanks much! ♥

Since I hadn't really intended for much 'plotting' it ended up coming out fairly mild. Hermione picked up on something, and (in my mind) she just mentioned it to Pansy to get her opinion. The Slytherin in Pansy kicked in, and the plot was quickly formed.

BUT the girls were really only giving them a nudge. *nods*
