Celebration
"Fuck!" Sirius let out a tortured cry as his foot connected with the dresser and his heart crumbled.
How could he not know? After all these years, how could James do this?
"Fuck," he said again. He sat down on his bed. The same bed he'd slept in since leaving his parents' house. The same bed in which he'd wanked himself raw, imagining the day when finally, finally James would see him for all that he was.
How could he have been so stupid? He'd watched James chase after skirts for years, but he thought - no, he knew that his friend was just getting it out of his system. But he'd been convinced that James would eventually come round.
Come round he did, Sirius thought. He'd come round all right. Now he was getting married. To her. Bloody hell, how had Sirius not seen this coming? Sure, she was beautiful and smart and strong, but ... but what he and James shared was so much more. Or at least he'd thought it was.
Sirius had always felt a connection to James, something that went beyond friendship, and beyond that closeness siblings felt. Sirius thought of his own brother, and how much he loved Regulus, how much he wanted to protect him. Sure, those feelings ran deep, but with James? What he felt for his best friend was so much more than that.
But he'd been stupid. He'd never told James how he felt. And now? Now he couldn't. Now he'd play the role of best friend, of brother - Merlin, it hurt to even think that - and support him as he married her.
He put his face in his hands and took a calming breath. He needed to pull himself together before heading back out there. Out there. Where everyone was celebrating the newly engaged couple. He swallowed, trying not to choke on his pain.
Why hadn't he said anything? How could James not have known? He should have known. Maybe that's what hurt the most. That James didn't really know him at all.
The door opened. Shit, hadn't he warded it?
"Hey."
Sirius didn't need to look up to know that voice. The always compassionate and supportive voice that soothed him time and again with mere words. "Hey."
He felt Remus sit down beside him, then a comforting arm wrapped around his shoulder and pulled him in. "You'll get through this, you know."
Sirius should have been shocked. Should have been surprised that Remus would know what James clearly didn't. Should have been embarrassed at being caught brooding when everyone else was celebrating. But somehow he wasn't. Somehow he felt a little better. Remus always made him feel better.
Sirius looked up, dropping one of his hands. He could feel a tear escaping, but he couldn't be arsed to do anything about it. It's not like Remus didn't know anyway.

"I know you're hurting," Remus said, removing his arm from Sirius's shoulders. "But you're strong, and you'll pull through. Besides, there's someone out there for you. You'll see."
Sirius opened his mouth to say something, perhaps argue that it just wouldn't be the same, when Remus gently wiped the tear from his face, and placed a kiss on his forehead. Oh.
"Well," Sirius said, standing up and shaking off his malaise. He had some thinking to do, but for now they had to join the celebration. "Shall we go torment Prongs about losing his freedom?"
Remus smiled. "A brilliant idea!"
