Auror Training - Day 3
As expected, the peace didn't last long. Except, surprisingly, it wasn't broken by Malfoy. It was Ron. He just couldn't get past the fact that he and Harry hadn't been partnered up for Auror training.
"So why does Kingsley think you and Malfoy would make such a great team?" he asked. Again. For the third time that morning.
"Ron, just leave it. You heard his reasons for matching people together; just let it go."
"But he's a pureblood and so am I. What other reason is there?"
Harry sighed loudly, trying desperately to stop himself tell Ron to piss off.
~*~*~
Draco was getting irritated. But surprisingly, not at Potter. Draco saw the looks Weasley kept shooting his way, and he heard him grumble and whine repeatedly, asking Potter why they weren't partners.
Surely that was easy enough to figure out. Everyone knew Granger was the brains of their trio. It was obvious to Draco that a Weasel-Potter team would be a disaster just waiting to happen.
He watched the weasel pester Potter again on their break. What was his problem anyway? Unless … ah, yes. Of course.
With a broad grin on his face, Draco returned to confirm his theory.
~*~*~
Harry was about to tell Ron to back off, again, when Malfoy appeared.
"What's the matter, Weasel? Are you jealous?"
Ron turned red. Harry looked at Malfoy, who was smirking, and had to prevent himself, with great effort, from doing the same. After all, Ron was being an arse, and Malfoy was making an effort.
And wasn't that an interesting development.
"Piss off, Ferret," Ron said. Malfoy smiled more broadly.
"I wonder, though. Is it me or Harry that you're jealous of?"
Harry had to place himself between the two to prevent Ron from strangling Malfoy.
~*~*~
Draco had been correct. The angry shade of puce the weasel turned - which clashed terribly with his ginger hair - was confirmation enough.
He had ridden on the coattails of the famous Harry Potter for years, and now his free ride was over. Everyone seemed to realise that fact except Potter. And now the weasel would have to make it on his own. A real shame that.
And Potter? Had Draco been mistaken, or was he amused by what Draco had said? Maybe he wasn't as thick as Draco thought.
Perhaps the next three years wouldn't be so bad.
~*~*~
Kingsley returned just in time.
"Later, Ferret."
"I shall count down the minutes," Malfoy retorted. Once again Harry found it difficult to keep a straight face.
"Tomorrow we'll be introducing you to the Internet," Kingsley began.
Ron and Malfoy wore matching looks of confusion, along with most of the other purebloods.
"The Internet," Kingsley continued, "is a Muggle invention --"
His words were cut off by a collective groan from the purebloods.
"You've heard of this thing, right, Potter?" Malfoy looked worried.
Harry nodded, somewhat pleased he knew something Malfoy didn't. Maybe the next three years wouldn't be so bad.
