They'll Never Know

"Say it with me, Harry. 'Firewhiskey? No, thank you. I just want coffee'."

Harry glared at his wife.

"You don't need alcohol to get through this night," she insisted.

"I don't see how you can be so calm about this, Gin. This is Malfoy we're talking about here."

"This is about your son, Harry. And Scorpius, who is neither his father nor his grandfather."

"I don't mean to suggest anything bad about Scorpius. He's a good kid, always has been. I mean the notion that our two families need to … get along."

"Just because Al chose now to tell us doesn't change the fact that the boys have been together for two years, and friends for longer. Clearly they are serious about each other. It's only right their families should get on socially."

Harry did not pout.

"But, Astoria, I fail to see why we must host the Potters."

"Draco, darling, you were raised by Narcissa. I have no doubt she instilled the proper rules of etiquette for all manner of social circumstances. Stop pretending otherwise."

"But … but this is Potter. The bane of my existence, my sworn enemy, my nemesis, the ever-present thorn in my side," Draco whinged.

"Oh, do grow up! It's been over two decades since you were school boys, and, contrary to what you sound like right now, the two of you are grown men. The boys have been friends for years and more than that for nearly two. It's high time their fathers began acting older than their sons."

Draco did not sulk.

~*~*~

Harry sat across the room not glaring at Malfoy. Malfoy did not glare back. After half an hour of failed attempts at engaging the men in small talk, the women gave up.

"Let me take you for a tour around the grounds," Astoria suggested with a pointed look in the men's direction. "I assure you they are far more pleasant than the company in here."

"Oh, good." Ginny smiled at Astoria before turning a cold stare first on Malfoy, then Harry. "Work it out, the two of you, and right now. We are going to be having dinner together monthly from now on. Yell, scream, punch or kill each other for all we care. Just get it out of your systems before dinner." Then she and Astoria walked outside.

Silence lay as a blanket over the room once the women were gone. Steeling himself for whatever was to come, Harry took a deep breath and looked at Malfoy. Then promptly burst out laughing.

Malfoy's face expressed the same mixture of irritation, apprehension, and … well, fear, as Harry presumed his own conveyed.

"What's so funny, Potter?"

"We are," Harry managed to choke out.

"And why is that?"

"Think about it, Malfoy. You, a former Death Eater. Me, Head Auror."

"Don't forget Saviour of the Wizarding World."

"Right. The two of us lived through the wrath of Voldemort, and yet … well, here we are."

Malfoy caught on and started to chuckle. "Point."

Harry laughed along with him, and wasn't that an altogether strange turn of events? He relaxed just a little, and it felt okay. Huh. "Scorpius is a fine boy," Harry finally said.

Malfoy smiled. "Yes, he is. And so is Albus."

"Yeah. Who would have ever thought?"

"What, that our sons would be gay?"

"Nah, that never bothered me. Just, you know."

"That a Malfoy and Potter would fall for each other?"

"Yeah. Hell, I was shocked when they became friends."

"You too? I thought I'd have a heart attack!"

Harry chuckled. "I'll admit the only thing that prevented me from having one was the picture of you having one."

"How very … honest of you, Potter." Harry shrugged and Malfoy got up. "Firewhiskey?"

"Hmm." Harry considered the offer. "I was supposed to insist on coffee if you offered alcohol."

Malfoy snorted. That was a noise Harry never expected to hear from the high-brow man. "You too? I was told tea."

"I suspect our wives have been collaborating for a while," Harry suggested.

"I suspect you are correct, Potter. But are we men, or what?" he asked, holding up the bottle.

"Definitely. Firewhiskey it is."

"Besides," Malfoy said conspiratorially as he handed Harry a glass. "If we drink it fast enough, they'll never know." And then he winked.

As the flow of Ogden's best warmed his throat, Harry thought it might not be as bad as he thought, getting to know Malfoy. Who'd have thought?

omg, thank you - this couldn't have come at a better time!!! (seriously, it's been a shitty few days for me).

"I'll admit the only thing that prevented me from having one was the picture of you having one."
This made me laugh :D And the idea of Ginny and Astoria collaborating made me smile huge.

For some reason I misread the summary and was waiting for harry and draco to get it on. Slightly disappointed but this was so cute. I love Harry and Draco agreeing about the boys. And Ginny and Astoria getting along so well! Very cute!

Draco did not sulk.
SUUUUURE they didn't.

Lovely little fic, dear, even if the boys are off-screen through the whole thing.

AHAHAHAHA!!! The entire thing was fantastic. But your Astoria was probably my favorite:

"Draco, darling, you were raised by Narcissa. I have no doubt she instilled the proper rules of etiquette for all manner of social circumstances. Stop pretending otherwise."

Hee. <3 I so seldom see a decent Astoria.

And I like to think that the boys waited two years to tell their fathers so that maybe the fathers would see that they were serious. :)

Hee. Thanks so much. I'm glad you liked Astoria. I imagine, as a pureblood, she'd be raised to 'handle' her husband.

And yeah ... I suspect they wanted to be able to back their relationship up with the fact they'd been together already for a while. Smart move.

Great line.

This is great and even believable.

OMG, I loved this! I love stories where the women are real women and the men are...well, obnoxious boys (sometimes). The characterisations were great! You go, ladies!

Hee. I totally see Ginny as a strong woman that would not put up with any crap if it made her son unhappy. And Astoria, though we never 'meet' her in the books, would have been raised a pureblood, and would know how to 'handle' her husband. *nods*

Glad you enjoyed it.
