No Home for the Holidays - Part 2

Harry walked out into the cold, no particular destination in mind, still irritated at the conversation he'd had with Hermione. He pulled up the collar of his cloak and braced himself against the elements.

He wandered over to the Quidditch pitch and sat on one of the benches. What he wouldn't give to go flying right now; it was always a good way to vent his frustrations. Harry looked up at the full moon and smattering of stars against the night sky, then watched as the snowflakes came down en masse to join the twinkling blanket already covering the pitch. He sighed. Another time, then.

He left the pitch and wandered by the lake, thinking about past holidays. He remembered his first real Christmas, when he'd first come to Hogwarts. It had been magical in so many ways. The mere thought that he wasn't that horrible, useless child he'd been told he was for so long, was enough of a gift to him. His entire world had opened up that year. To be accepted for who he was - who could have asked for a better present?

As he kept walking, Harry came upon a set of footprints leading … to Dumbledore's crypt. A familiar shade of blonde hair was just visible on the opposite side. Old habits dying hard, Harry still carried his Invisibility Cloak around with him. Good thing, he thought as he draped it around himself and edged his way to where Malfoy was.

As he got closer, he could hear Malfoy's voice, though there was only one set of footprints leading here. Harry was careful to remove his own footprints along the way, and stand in a set of Malfoy‘s when he got close enough to hear.

Malfoy was sitting on the ground, shivering, and his voice sounded choked and shaky.

" … thought you knew everything. Well, I hope you see now that you were wrong."

Harry's wand hand was itchy. How could Malfoy, after everything he witnessed, think that Dumbledore had been wrong?

"You couldn't protect us. No one could."

Oh. Harry had heard about Narcissa, and had been surprised about his reaction. Ron had been pleased that another Malfoy had bit the dust, before Hermione reminded him, with an accompanying clip to the back of the head, that Narcissa Malfoy had saved Harry's life. Harry didn't know quite how he felt, just that it was unfair.

"Of course you were right about the Death Eater business, and the Dark Lord. He really was a madman … if you can call that a man. But … my parents were in too deep already. There was nothing I could do. Can't you see that now?"

Harry wondered briefly why Malfoy had come here, rather than to have gone to Dumbledore's portrait. At least there he could have got the satisfaction of a response.

"You might have been able to protect us, but with you gone, no one else cared - no one cares about a Death Eater and his family."

Harry suddenly realised that, of course, Malfoy wouldn't feel comfortable asking the Headmistress for access to Dumbledore.

"My mother is dead, and your honourable Aurors aren't even looking for her killer."

What?

"She's just a Malfoy. Who cares, right? What does it matter that she saved the precious Saint Potter‘s life?"

He was quiet for a while, and Harry braced himself to get out of the way, but Malfoy didn't move. He just sat there, shivering in the snow. Harry was tempted to cast a warming spell, but he knew that Malfoy would be less than impressed about being spied on. Harry couldn't blame him. After all, he'd just yelled at Hermione for sticking her nose in where it didn't belong. But this is different, Harry thought. He had to be sure Malfoy wasn't up to something.

"What good did it all do anyway? Golden Boy's testimony -- oh, you would have been so proud. He pissed off a good number of people that wanted her blood." A harsh barking laugh interrupted his speech. "He's got a set on him; I'll give him that."

Harry stifled a laugh. Malfoy had never complimented him before. That was new.

"He sure didn't win any friends that day. I thought the weasel was going to combust on the spot. Then again, who would dare touch the Saviour? Bet your Auror friends would never stop searching if it were precious Potter that got killed."

Harry's stomach sank. He knew, without a doubt, that Malfoy was right.

"Oh, Potter managed to keep her out of Azkaban alright, but I wonder if maybe she‘d have been better off there. At least she'd still be alive. At least I‘d still have a mother."

Malfoy's abrupt movement caught Harry by surprise, and he didn't have a chance to get out of the way. Fortunately, Malfoy chose to go in the opposite direction. Harry stood there for a long while, looking at Dumbledore's tomb, replaying Malfoy's words over and over again.

Draco entered the Slytherin common room to find Pansy asleep in her usual chair by the fire. He shook her gently by the shoulder.

"Pansy, wake up."

She blinked, grumbled, and pushed his hand away. He chuckled and shook her a little harder.

"Pansy, you fell asleep by the fire."

"Wha?" She opened her eyes, and gradually focussed on Draco's face. "You're back."

"Brilliant deduction."

She scowled at him. "What time is it?"

He glanced down at his watch, hands still shaking. "Just gone midnight."

She grabbed his hands. "You're freezing! Were you outside this whole time?"

"Mmm."

"Come sit with me by the fire," she said, and pulled him down to squish in beside her. With a wave of her wand, his cloak was dry and warm. Strange that he hadn't thought to do that himself.

"Draco, if you're planning to stay at the school over the hols, you need to promise me not to freeze yourself to death."

He grinned. "I promise."

She glared at him. "I‘m serious! If it means I have to stay here with you, I will."

He put his hands up in mock surrender. "No, no. It's alright. I just went for a walk, and …" He thought about telling her where he'd been, and what he'd been doing, but decided against it.

"And what?"

"And I lost track of the time. Lost in thought, you know."

"She wouldn't want you to freeze to death, Draco."

"I know."

Harry had tried to find time to Floo Kingsley over the next few days, but between Hermione's hovering - she'd stopped prodding him about going to the Burrow, but she rarely gave him a moment alone - and the common room never being empty, he hadn't a chance during the day. And he had no idea how to reach Kingsley at night.

Giving up for the time being, Harry finally escaped the company of Hermione and sent Kingsley a letter with one of the school owls. He'd have to wait until everyone went home for the holidays before he could Floo the Minister. Hopefully he wasn't taking the week before Christmas off as well.

"Are you sure?" was all Hermione said as he bid them goodbye.

He smiled. "I'm sure. You go enjoy yourselves, and I'll see you Christmas Day, yeah?"

"Alright, mate." Ron slapped him on the back. "We'll expect to see you before lunch."

"See you then."

Ginny looked put out, but just said, "Bye, Harry," and left.

Ron shrugged as he watched his sister walk away. "She'll come round," he said.

Hermione gave him a big hug. "See you Christmas morning."

He watched his friends walk away, then ran back up to Gryffindor Tower, hoping it wasn't too late to catch Kingsley in his office.

"Harry!" Kingsley greeted him. "Good to see you."

"Hi, Kingsley. Um … Minister."

"Now, now. None of that, Harry. Not when it's just the two of us talking."

Harry relaxed a bit. "Kingsley, I was wondering --"

"About Narcissa Malfoy's case?" he cut in.

"Yes."

"I got your owl the other day, and I've been in contact with the Auror department."

"And?"

"You know better than that, Harry. I can't discuss an open case with you."

"So it's still open?" Harry asked hopefully. "They're still investigating?"

"Of course they are." Kingsley fidgeted in his seat. "Why the interest?"

Harry couldn't believe his ears. "She saved my life!" he blurted out before he could restrain himself. "And in case you've forgotten, she risked her life to do it."

"Don't be under any delusions, Harry. She did it for her son, not for you."

"What does that matter? I'd be dead. And Voldemort would be alive, and there's a very good chance he'd have taken over all of wizarding Britain by now."

"Yes … well …"

"Kingsley, I'm asking you to give me your word that whoever did this is going to be brought to justice."

"I can't promise anything, Harry."

"Promise me you'll do everything in your power to be sure her killer is found and pays for his crimes."

"Or hers," Kingsley said.

Harry‘s eyes widened. "You know something!" he said.

Kingsley sighed, seeming to realise his mistake. "We may have a lead."

"And you're pursuing it?"

"Enough, Harry." Kingsley gave him a stern look. "We may be on friendly terms, but don't push me."

"Sorry."

"Yes, well. I have told you more than I should have. It is an ongoing case that the Aurors are pursuing. I won't discuss this or any other case with you. But I will assure you that it has not been swept to the side."

"Thank you, Kingsley. Minister. I appreciate that. And I'm sorry to have been so …"

"You?" Kingsley chuckled. Harry tried not to look insulted. "Yes, Dumbledore and I had a few talks about you. Severus too."

"Oh, I'm sure you heard an earful from Snape," Harry groaned, imagining all the gems his former potions professor would have shared with them.

Kingsley's deep laughter filled the common room. "I do believe impertinent was mentioned a time or two, yes."

Harry blushed. "Er …"

"Not to worry, Harry. I know you have your reasons for wanting to see the person brought to justice. You'll just have to accept my word that sometimes justice takes its own time."

"Yeah," Harry sighed. "I think I get that."

~*~*~

As he returned to his empty dorm room after seeing Pansy off, Draco was assaulted by the silence. He picked up the card that she had given him earlier that day. Another scantily-clad, very fit man in a Santa's hat. He smiled at the sprig of mistletoe hanging suggestively over the man's shoulder.

Draco thought back to Slytherin Christmases past. He looked at the basket on the side table, and recalled with amusement the disaster that befell anyone that got Crabbe as their secret Santa. In their third year, in the hopes that he could prevent a recurrence of the fruit-basket-without-a-preservation-charm incident from the year before, Draco had taken Vincent under his wing, and dragged him around the shops of Hogsmeade. There had been a basket vendor that Vince had taken an interest in. He'd refused to tell Draco whom the gift was for, so Draco had helped him select a plain one. Which he opened himself a few days later. Draco supposed it could have been worse. But still, he never helped Vince with his shopping again.

Draco's thoughts drifted to holidays at the manor. He remembered his mother, in response to his persistent prodding, reading Twas the Night Before Christmas to him every night for two weeks straight. And he recalled reciting it, The stockings were hung by the chimney with care… as he insisted on hanging his own stocking. The house elves were not pleased, and his father thought it silly. But his mother had found it entertaining. Narcissa had always indulged him.

Sighing, Draco pulled out a black box from his trunk, opened it up, and stared at his mother's platinum wedding band. It was all the jewellery she had been wearing the day she'd been killed, and Draco needed to have something with him at school that reminded him of her. He blinked as he felt the familiar stinging behind his eyes. Would it ever get easier? he wondered.

Thanks, hon. I'm glad to be writing too. Funny, but I have actually been writing a bit, only most has been for fests (hd_inspired and hd_holidays) and RL stuff. Even still, it feels like I've been missing something, not writing like this. So it feels good.

Just posted #4 today; #5 should be up tomorrow.

Aww, I really want to give Draco a hug. I love that Harry is all bent upon finding justice. That's awesome. It's sad that he has to go find out and put pressure to make sure it happens but that is a realistic situation.

I love the chat between him and Kingsley.

"Thank you, Kingsley. Minister. I appreciate that. And I'm sorry to have been so …"

"You?" Kingsley chuckled. Harry tried not to look insulted. "Yes, Dumbledore and I had a few talks about you. Severus too."

"Oh, I'm sure you heard an earful from Snape," Harry groaned
