Favourites
The girls were looking once again at the Christmas cards hanging on a string above the doorway to the dining room.
"What's that one again, Daddy?" Cecilia asked.
"That's the nativity," Harry explained.
"I know that's the baby Jesus in the manger," Alexa said, "but I forget the story of those men."
"Those are the Three Wise Men," Draco said. "They followed the Star of Bethlehem all the way to where Jesus lay, so they could bring him gifts."
"Presents?" Cecilia asked.
"Yes. They brought him gold, frankincense and myrrh."
"That one's my favourite," Alexa said. "The one with the angels wrapping Christmas lights all around that huge Christmas tree."
"Nuh-uh," Cecilia corrected. "The best is this one." She reached high up, and pointed to the card on the far left, the one with a picture of Santa and his reindeer. "Santa Claus takes all the presents the elves make, and he delivers them on Christmas Eve to all the children in the world. Isn't that right, Papa?" Without waiting for an answer, she continued. "Then he puts goodies in the stockings of all the good boys and girls."
"And coal in all the bad ones'," Draco added.
She frowned, considering Draco's words. "I've been good," she announced.
"Me too," her sister added.
"Yes, you have," Harry agreed.
"What's your favourite card, Daddy?"
Harry thought about it for a while. "Maybe this one?" He pointed to one with a picture of a Christingle* on it.
"That looks silly," the girls said.
"It may look silly, but it is often part of advent services," Harry told them. "The orange represents the world, and the red ribbon around its centre represents the blood of Jesus."
"What are those stick things with candy on them?"
"The candies represent the fruit of the earth, and the four seasons."
"And what‘s the candle in the middle for?" Alexa asked.
"It represents Jesus, because he is the light of the world."
"It still looks goofy to me," Cecilia said. Draco snorted.
"Alright then," Harry said. "I think maybe my favourite non-goofy card is this one." It was a blue card with one large snowflake on the front.
"How come?"
"Because it's from Grandma Molly," Draco explained.
"And what's your favourite, Papa?" Alexa asked.
"The one from Nana Cissa," Cecilia explained. "'Course." It was a beautiful Yule scene, with a picture of a family roasting chestnuts over a fire. The mantel was decorated with spruce garland and holly, and there was a large wreath in the centre of the wall above.
"No, I think this one's my favourite," Draco said. He'd chosen one with a picture of children surrounded by presents, some opened, some still wrapped, on Christmas Day. In this picture, the mantel was decorated with ivy and cranberries, and there was a rather ominous looking icicle hanging on the outside of the window.
"Why, Papa?"
"Because it makes me think of you two." The girls squealed with delight.
"Now that we've decided our favourites, let's get you to bed, so Santa can bring you something. You know he won't come if you're still up."
The girls scurried up the stairs. It was the one day of the year they didn't argue about going to bed.
"Why don't you pour us some eggnog while I put these two to bed?" Draco suggested.
"Will do." Harry made his way into the kitchen.
"Oh, and Harry," he heard Draco call over his shoulder.
"Hmm?"
"Don't even think about touching those mince pies; they're for tomorrow."
"Yeah, yeah," Harry replied. His husband knew him all too well.
When Draco returned, Harry smiled up at him. "Here," he said, reaching to remove a strand of tinsel from his hair. "It seems the girls like to decorate more than the house."
Draco took Harry by the hand and pulled him back a few steps. Harry looked up and smiled. Draco looked at him expectantly. Harry pulled his husband into his arms and gave him a luxurious kiss.
"Mmm. I think I'm going to miss having mistletoe hanging around the house," Harry said.
"It will be here right through New Year's Eve."
"Well then," Harry said, pulling Draco in for another snog. "I say we take full advantage while we can."
"Why, Harry," Draco said, smiling. "I couldn't agree more."
