Ginny's World

Ginny awoke on the morning of September 1st feeling very good about things. Very, very good about things.

The spring had been spent mourning the losses sustained in the war, burying the dead, memorialising those who lost their lives in both wars. Her family ached - none worse than George - over the loss of Fred, but she had managed to move on. She had Fred to thank for that. How she envied him his strength, even in death. He'd left a note behind for each of them. Almost as if he knew.

His words would always be her comfort.

~*~*~

The summer meant the rebuilding of Hogwarts. Ginny had wanted to help, had even gone so far as to tell her mother that she was going, no matter what.

Then her father stepped in. Ginny had never seen him so angry. His eyes were cold and his voice was calm when he told her he wanted to speak with her.

"Ginevra Weasley," he said, "I have never been so disappointed in you."

"I want to help at Hogwarts," she had argued.

"For once in your life, put what your mother wants before what you want."

So Ginny stayed with Molly.

~*~*~

But the summer was over now. Ginny didn't have to be the one left out any more. She wouldn't have to envy her brother and Hermione for spending all their time with Harry.

He hadn't written her but once all summer, and as time went on she got angrier and angrier. Angry at her mother for demanding she stay home. Angry at her father for taking her mother's side. Angry at circumstances that kept her and Harry apart. But not angry at Harry. Never angry with him.

They would be together soon, finally, and Ginny's heart couldn't stop racing. Tonight.

~*~*~

Ginny said a cursory goodbye to her parents at the train station, after they insisted on escorting her there. Honestly, she was seventeen, not a child, for Merlin's sake! She had fought in the war! It was bad enough she'd been cooped up at home all summer.

Oh, to be one of those whose parents had the decency to say farewell from a distance, rather than embarrassing her in front of everyone! She couldn't wait for her schooling to be over, so she could move out with Harry and get on with her life. Her life as Mrs Harry Potter.

~*~*~

Ginny entered the Great Hall, head held high, knowing she was going to be the envy of every witch there.

She approached the Gryffindor table searching for Harry, but she didn't see any eighth year Gryffindors. Before she had a chance to do anything, a friend of hers pulled Ginny into a seat, and Headmistress McGonagall began to speak.

Ginny's eyes searched the Great Hall and discovered a fifth student table had been added for eighth years. Her stomach fell as she saw Draco Malfoy lean in and kiss Harry. Her Harry!

When Harry returned the kiss, Ginny's world crumbled.

If it makes you feel any better, Ginny plays a minor role in the seventh book. A VERY minor role. Something rather unexpected, since she had been built up as a strong character beforehand.

Oh, you won't find any Ginny/Harry fics in this LJ. I may have them together as part of a storyline, but they will never be the focus.

I don't hate Ginny as such; I just believe her to be immature, and rather self-absorbed (but that's not unusual for someone her age). I also think she believes she loves Harry, and until she falls in love with someone for real, she won't know the difference. I don't believe any of her 'relationships' before Harry were anything but attempts at getting his attention, so she's never given herself the chance to develop genuine feelings for anyone. It's rather sad, really.

Hee! I think you can tell by the comments here that you're not alone in your dislike/hatred of Ginny. And I do believe that Draco is a better match for Harry. Even if he were heterosexual, I wouldn't see Ginny as the girl for him. Luna, yes ... but not Ginny. But that's just my opinion.

Glad you enjoyed the fic. And don't let Ginny ruin the books for you. They have so much more to offer than just the dynamic between Harry and her. Even the seventh book. You could read it right up to the epilogue and ignore the last few pages. Or it could form a nightmare that Harry wakes up from. :D

It amuses me that Draco fans call Ginny self-absorbed. Oh the irony.

Oh, there's no question that Draco is self-absorbed. You won't get an argument from me on that point. :)
