Room for One More

Harry paced his kitchen, coffee in hand. Coffee, he mumbled. Coffee, coffee, coffee, coffee. He needed it. A whole pot of it. Actually, he probably needed a good stiff drink, but caffeine would have to do. Today was the day. No changes of heart and no turning back. He and Draco had agreed. They'd been together for six months, ever since they'd seen each other at the train station after sending the kids off to school.

They'd had a brief fling just after the war, before either of them had married, and they'd made their choices all those years back. It had been a mutual decision, both of them wanting children and neither of them willing to be second choice in each other's lives. They'd had their time together and would always have their memories.

They'd both married, had children, and Harry had had a good life, and if Draco was to be believed -- and Harry had no reason not to believe him -- things had worked out well for him too. But both marriages, once their children had gone to school, had fallen apart. Thankfully the divorces had been reasonably civil and it seemed the children hadn't been affected too terribly, since they'd waited for all the children to be at Hogwarts.

But now Draco and Harry were going to tell their children about their relationship. Scorpius already knew that Draco was gay--had known for years--but Harry's children didn't know about that side of him until recently. In fact, until about a month ago, no one but Draco knew. Harry had finally told Ron, Hermione and Ginny then, but had left out the bit about Draco. Typically, Hermione had pressed, but Harry hadn't wanted to deal with any more at the time, and didn't really want to kill Ron all in one go. He and Draco still didn't get on, even after twenty years.

Two weeks ago, Harry had met with James, Al and Lily, and had broken the news to them. Since that time, they'd been in daily contact via owl and they'd all wanted to know who the man was. His children would be the first to know.

Draco rubbed his hands together furiously, incredibly nervous about his upcoming conversation with Scorpius. His son already knew he was gay, but it had always been something abstract. This thing with Harry was more important to him than he cared to admit, and his son's opinion mattered to him. Draco was about to move from concept to reality, and he didn't know how Scorpius would react.

Not only was this another man, but it was his best friend's father. A man he'd known for three years, a man whom he'd heard about all his life, a man whose home he'd stayed in.

Harry was going to meet with his children on his own while Draco met with Scorpius. Harry would let him know how it went, and whether or not the children would be joining them for dinner.

"You're kidding," James said.

"Scorp's dad?" Lily asked.

"Does that mean Scorp and I will be brothers?" Al inquired hopefully.

Their immediate reactions pretty much summed things up. James, who was still coming to grips with Harry being gay, was not exactly angry, but was definitely not interested in having dinner as one big happy family, as he had put it. Lily and Al, however, seemed to look forward to it.

"What does this mean, Dad?" Scorpius asked. "Are you two going to live together? Are we going to spend all of our holidays together?"

"We haven't really got that far in our talks," Draco replied. "Harry and I know that it's not just about the two of us. Our children are the most important people in our lives, and we will always listen to what you say and take that into consideration."

"Oh."

"And I have always made time for just the two of us, Scorpius. Nothing will ever change that."

Scorpius smiled. "Good."

Dinner was a bit awkward at first. Though Al and Scorpius had been friends for three years, and each had spent time in the other's home, their fathers had never both been present at the same time for more than a few minutes. Harry felt a bit like he and Draco were being judged.

Al grinned at Harry and announced, "Okay, I think we've tortured them long enough already."

"Really?" Lily asked. "I don't know. I think we could carry on a bit longer." She winked at Harry, who was suddenly reminded of his ex-wife.

Scorpius stood up, raising his glass and looking from Al to Lily to Harry. "Welcome to the family," he said with a smile, then he winked at Draco much the same way Lily had at Harry a moment earlier.

Al and Lily lifted their glasses to Scorpius and Draco and echoed the sentiment. "Welcome to the family."

Harry and Draco smiled at each other and drank to the toasts.

Draco looked at Harry, then motioned to the entrance where James stood watching them. Harry watched as his eldest son made his way slowly to their table.

"Room for one more?"
