Auror Training - Day 2
"Tough break, mate," Ron greeted a still-sleepy Harry on their second day of training.
"Ah," Harry said, rubbing the back of his neck, "so it wasn't just some bad dream."
"Alas, Potter, it was not."
"Malfoy."
"Ferret."
"Potter, Weasel."
"Three years?" Harry groaned.
"I'd say we'd better make the best of it, or it will be a long three years."
"I reckon you're right," Harry agreed.
"But ... but ..." Ron stammered.
"What would you have us do, complain to Kingsley?"
"You're Harry bloody Potter. He'll do --"
"Nothing, Ron. Just leave it. We can work together, can't we, Malfoy?"

Malfoy glared at Ron.
Harry leaned in and whispered, "What's the matter, Malfoy? Scared?"
Ron laughed.
"You wish. I was just observing that it would be so very typical for you to get special treatment now. Just like you always have. Even the weasel here knows it."
"Why you --"
"No, Ron," Harry interrupted. "He's right."
Ron huffed grumpily.
"Well, maybe not about the past, but about now." Harry had heard the words from Malfoy before, but they'd always sounded like the petulant ramblings of a spoiled boy. Now, much as Harry was loath to admit it, Malfoy was spot-on.

Harry was met with matching looks of shock from Malfoy and Ron.
"I have no intention of trying for special treatment, Malfoy." He turned to face Ron, who wore a forlorn expression. "I mean it. There's no place for it here. I mean to be the best Auror I can be, which means going through the training the same way as everyone else. No special requests, no favours, no breaks."
"You really are an idiot, Potter," Malfoy observed.
"Oi!" Ron snapped.
"Don't get your knickers in a twist, Weasel. I was merely observing that a Slytherin would take full advantage."

"I propose we work together as best we can," Harry offered, leaving his Slytherin side as a topic for future discussion. He held his hand out to seal the deal.
Malfoy hesitated slightly before taking Harry's hand. "Deal."
"Everyone here has the ability to become a good Auror," Kingsley announced as he entered the classroom, "but we all have weaknesses. Therefore, we have paired you up according to your skills. Where you may struggle, your partner has strength; your skills complement each other's. As I mentioned yesterday, you are expected to work together and help each other get through everything."

"Potter," Malfoy approached Harry at the end of class, "may I have a word?"
"Sure." Harry waved off an indignant Ron, telling him he'd catch him up the next day.
"I presume you meant what you said about being the best Auror you can be?" Harry nodded. "I mean to do the same."
"And?" Harry asked, wondering what Malfoy was trying to say.
"Shall we grab a bite?"
Harry's jaw dropped. "Why?"
"You heard Kingsley. Get to know your partners better if you're to work together. Besides, I'm starving."
"Sure," Harry agreed, wondering just how long the peace would last.

That, or their mutual attraction is of such magnitude that it will only be a matter of days before they hop into bed together and go on the become the most devastating, bickering, coupley-auror team ever! :D I look forward to following whichever you go for!
