Author's Notes: All information related to Lord Shiva's dance of Destruction and Creation obtained through wikipedia. A big thanks to
ruffians for this prompt, because I found the research very interesting for this little ficlet. I hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed learning a bit about it.
Harry found himself surprised at his current situation. He was sitting with Draco Malfoy - not that unusual an occurrence in and of itself these days, since Draco was his fellow Auror and partner - in a small town in South India, watching a manifestation of Lord Shiva's dance of Destruction and Creation.
They'd wrapped up their case earlier that evening, but rather than return to the Ministry, Draco had suggested that they stay on for the night, and take in a bit of the local culture, something they rarely had time to do. He'd pointed out, quite rightly, that no one was going to look at any report they filed that night anyway, and that they deserved a night off after the ten straight days of round-the-clock investigation they'd been conducting on this case.
Draco had explained that it was a classic good versus evil tale, told through dance, an intrinsic part of Indian culture, akin to meditation. He'd become quite animated retelling one of the tales of sages attacking Lord Shiva several times, one time with a snake, or something like that. Not that Harry remembered all the details, or even got what Draco had been talking about entirely, but his partner's enthusiasm had intrigued him enough that he found himself agreeing to remain another night. And now that they were there, Harry was enjoying the evening immensely.
As he watched his partner's eyes twinkling with unrepressed joy, Harry suspected that his own enjoyment had very little to do with the Cosmic Dancer in front of them.

Those two are so cute! Great work!

Date: 2008-03-28 06:12 am (UTC)Yeah ... I suspect he'll remember about as much about the 'culture' after a year as he remembers from Binns's classes. But the twinkle in Draco's eyes? He'll remember that forever. *nods*

Date: 2008-03-28 06:17 am (UTC)I was born in a place called Madurai. My mom grew up there but nobody we know lives there anymore. *g* I was only born there, out of the two years I spent in India, I was mostly in Bombay, where my dad grew up. :D
It's okay ... I know very little about the places outside the US and not even enough about India. :\

Date: 2008-03-28 06:28 am (UTC)Have you ever been back for a visit? Is English your first language? If not, do you speak English with your parents? See what this innocent little comment of yours has spurred? I'm always intrigued by people who have a mother tongue other than the main one in the school system, and if they feel that early years were a struggle or not as a result. Or if, like music, having another language helps with the learning experience somehow. *is curious*

Date: 2008-03-28 06:34 am (UTC)Yes, I go back to visit when my family and I can. Most of my relatives are in India and it's nice because we get to see the major cities when we go because my dad's sister is in Delhi, my grandma in Bombay and my mom's brother is in the south.
I spoke an Indian language first but I learned English when we moved to the US, which was when I was two. I forgot my first languages, much to my despair though I do understand Telegu, which is a South Indian language and a bit of Hindi.
It's fun when small comments get into longer conversations though. *g*
I am afraid I can't be much of a help telling you about that cuz I grew up with the US school system. :\

Date: 2008-03-28 06:42 am (UTC)Ah ... my mother spoke only English (her native tongue was German) to my sister and me, so we didn't have that other language at home either. But I have a friend who only ever spoke Hungarian at home, then had to learn English in school.
I found my mom actually threw English words into her German conversations, which was funny. I, on the other hand, throw German in when I speak French. *rolls eyes* I've forgotten most of what I learned of both languages, though. *sighs*
