I gaze at my reflection in the mirror, unable to focus, unable to reason, unable to run. I am minutes away from sealing my fate, joining my future with the one who loves me. Surrounded by friends, loved ones, well-wishers. And suddenly I cannot breathe.
My ears are filled with buzzing. I hear voices I recognize but I understand nothing. Everything is a haze, unclear, unfocussed. My thoughts drift away from this place, away from these people. I see pale skin, fair hair, and eyes of stormy grey. My soul is there with him, adrift, while my body remains here.
But he doesn't know how I long for him, for his touch, for his kiss. I laugh inwardly, a jeering laugh at my hopelessness, as I imagine his reaction if I were to tell him.
Surprise, for we have been rivals for so long. Shock, yes, but more than that, so much more. I imagine laughter, scathing laughter, ripping me apart, mocking me, cursing me to a life alone, a life never lived, a life without love.
To thine own self be true ...
And so I face the day, and commit the ultimate betrayal ... that of my own heart.
