Ginny and Dean made their way back up to the castle to find their fellow Gryffindors. As Dean had hoped, they were all in the same place he had left them.
"Seamus, I want a word," Ginny said as soon as she caught his eye.
"Ooh ... talk dirty to me, baby," he replied with a waggle of his eyebrows. A smack upside the head from Ginny and a glare from Dean shut him down quickly enough.
"Listen, Ginny, I'm sorry about what I said," Seamus offered.
"You should be," she retorted. "First, it's not true. Second, as my supposed friend, you shouldn't talk to me like that in front of Malfoy or Harry."
"You mean to tell me you're not jealous?" Seamus asked. "I find that hard to believe."
Ginny's face turned red. "Well, maybe a little. Okay, more than a little," she corrected once she saw Seamus's sceptical look. "But I'm not a shrew."
"Right. Not a shrew. I'll remember that," Seamus said. "But you were trying to manipulate Harry by making him feel guilty."
Ginny's face went redder. "So what if I was?"
"You were trying to get him to go on a date with you on Valentine's Day, Gin! You can't tell me you didn't have a reason for that."
"I won't deny that I hate Malfoy. I mean his dad tried to kill me, for Merlin's sake!"
"But that was his father, not him," Hermione interjected. "You can't hold him responsible for what Lucius did. Draco had no idea what his father was up to."
"Says he."
"We all say that, Gin. He can no more be responsible for Lucius's actions than you can be responsible for your mother's or father's."
Ginny scowled at Hermione's logic. "That may be true …"
"It is true, Ginny," Dean offered, with a gentle touch to her upper arm. "Draco is not Lucius."
"Okay, then. But he still tried to kill Ron and Katie."
"No, he tried to kill Dumbledore, and Katie and I accidentally ended up getting hurt," Ron corrected. "But you know what his situation was. You know he only acted to save his parents' lives. And you know that Voldemort was going to kill him too. He felt like he didn't have a choice."
"But he did have a choice!"
"And you've never made a mistake in your life?" Ron asked incredulously. "I agree he made a bad decision, but given his father's before that, he wasn't exactly surrounded by opportunities to make a better one."
"I can't believe you expect me to forgive and forget!"
"I don't. None of us do. All we expect is for you to respect Harry's choices, and treat Draco with respect." Ginny scoffed at that.
"How about treating him civilly?" Hermione suggested. "Do you think you can do that?"
Ginny narrowed her eyes and surveyed the room. "Maybe."
"Well, that's a start anyway," Hermione said, sounding relieved.
"You do know that you're a bunch of hypocrites, don't you?"
"What?" Ron retorted.
"Hypocrites, the lot of you. Well, okay, not Hermione. But the rest of you are. I didn't see any of you being nice to Malfoy until Harry told you all off. In fact, you were all teasing and taunting him as much as I was at the pub when Harry went to the loo. And I don't recall hearing any of you apologize to him."
Dean looked awkwardly at the floor. "You're right. I think maybe we should do something about that."
"What?" Ginny exclaimed. "I didn't mean that you should --"
"But you're right, Ginny. We weren't fair and he deserves an apology. We were all wrong."
"I'm not apologizing," she insisted.
"That's your choice, but I'm going to," Dean said to the room. "He didn't deserve our treatment, and Harry sure as hell didn't deserve that either."

Date: 2008-02-08 08:41 pm (UTC)I firmly believe that shared experiences involving deep emotion or trauma bring people together and 'mature' them faster than every day events. After losing people you loved/hated/knew on either or both sides of a conflict, almost losing your own life, and watching pain and suffering all around you has a way of bringing into focus how petty little things like house rivalries really are. Shared pain/anguish/joy bonds people, whether they're consciously aware of it or not.
Whew! I rambled on a bit there, didn't I?
Thanks, hon. :)

Date: 2008-02-11 01:35 am (UTC)I figure if I make a point of scheduling time to just kick back and not think about stuff, it can help. As a single mom, that's only once a month, but I made a point of doing it last year, and felt all the better for it. So I carried on my resolution for this year too.
Sometimes we need to be selfish ... if we aren't, we can't be much use to others, can we? *big hugs*

Date: 2008-02-19 04:56 am (UTC)Ginny is right we all have choices but did he really have a choice, could anyone actually deny Voldie knowing that in doing so your family was going to be killed, probably right in front of you. I don't see a choice there. Agree and try to find a way out.
