Summary: Some habits start in the strangest ways.

As I take a long, deep drag from my cigarette, I close my eyes and feel my lungs accepting the foreign substance willingly. I'm a wizard and I'll live longer than most Muggles. Wizards have potions and spells to prevent many ailments, so I don't worry. It's a Muggle habit and should turn me off, but that's half its appeal.

It started exactly two years ago, as my way to rebel against my father. Ridiculous, really, since I was already seventeen and had survived a war. To think such a silly thing would be a blow to him seems unlikely.

I close my eyes and smile as I take another drag. Oh, but it was. It irritated him to no end to see me draw Muggle toxins into my pureblood lungs, and enjoy it.

I laugh aloud at the memory.

"Are you out here smoking?" Harry asks, wrapping his arms around me. "I thought I heard you laughing."

"Yeah, I was just reminiscing about Lucius. I like to remember his face as he saw me smoke one of my first cigarettes."

"Good thing you only do that once a year. Those things will kill you."

What Harry doesn't know ...

No, no, no Draco. I don't care if you're a wizard or not, those things are bad for you. And they give you bad breath, and discolor your teeth, and worst of all, they make your skin age faster! You need to stop, please!

*ponders* - perhaps this is the reason I look younger than most of my friends? I suspect they wouldn't appreciate hearing that from me, though.

Yeah ... he doesn't limit it to once a year, but it's not that much. But still ... yeah ... he shouldn't.

Yes, skin definitely ages faster. And I didn't mention the increased prevalence of lung, esophageal, throat, stomach and mouth cancer in smokers. I figured the skin aspect of it would be more worrisome for Draco. *lol*

And I loved that he rebelled against Lucius in such a Muggle way! Go Draco!

I generally don't write either of them smoking, and probably won't again ... but the prompt was 'drag' and that just came to me right away.

I think Draco could suck on various other things that would be much sexier than a cigarette. :D

Beautiful, and even poetic images. Yes, sometimes our ways of making a point can be very strange.

And now that no one hear us, Draco, just between you and me. Rebellion? With your past and your family, brilliant idea. Get a piercing, dye your hair, dress like Kurt Cobain. Any of that would probably give Lucius an embolism.
But smoking? *sees red* No way! Spit! Spit! Spit!

Yeah, well ... what can I say? The prompt "drag" just brought a cigarette to mind, and I went with it. I probably won't ever write either of them smoking again (I haven't before either), and I do like your suggestions.

Sorry! That's just me and my anti-smoking daily battle (I've delivered a lot of bad news regarding smoking). Your story is lovely and the images quite sexy. I really wish wizards can develop something to avoid them the smoking after-effects

No worries, hon. I don't smoke (any more ... quit LONG time ago), and I don't like showing the characters smoking in my fics. This is the first, and possibly the last time for me ... and only for a drabble prompt. Otherwise, I wouldn't have. Seriously. I didn't feel like you were lecturing, so no worries. My dad suffered from emphysema, and had a spot on his lung that was discovered only weeks before he died. And my mom suffered many instances of heart failure as a result of fluid on her lungs. She died from cancer, though the source cancer wasn't identified. Both smoked heavily. Sadly, almost all my friends smoke.

I'd rather the wizards develop something to help all Muggles quit, to be honest with you. *g*

Great fic! I really loved it. I think if someone tells Draco the skin issues he could happen, he'll drop the habit really quickly. ;)
