dracoharry100's prompt #51 - "Window" and my GJ 100_prompts table 053 - "Look"
Summary: Draco faces a return to Hogwarts after the war.
Disclaimer: The characters contained herein are not mine. They belong to JK Rowling and her publishers. No money is being made from this fiction, which is presented for entertainment purposes only.
As Draco sits by the window, he hears his parents in the background arguing. They're arguing about him. They seem to be doing a lot of that lately.
Narcissa wants him to return to Hogwarts and complete his seventh and final year of education. Who is she trying to kid? He has to repeat it altogether. Last year was a farce, and everyone knows it. Sure, he had learned some things, but really, with the Carrows taking charge of most everything, and Slytherin running the school, not to mention Snape as Headmaster, it's not like much actual education went on.
Lucius argues against his return, pushing for Draco to sit his NEWT exams without returning. He is apparently under the impression that Draco will do well. Draco is not under any such delusion.
He isn't sure why his father refuses to accept the obvious. Last year he lived his life in fear. He was afraid of his fellow Slytherins at school, since his family had lost favour with the Dark Lord. The Carrows were frightening, even if they did favour the Slytherins. Then at home ... Draco shudders at the memory, and looks at his father's reflection in the window.
"I'm going back," Draco says without being asked.
Lucius's reflection glares back. "You realize that you could sit your examinations now?" he asks.
"And you must realize that I wouldn't do well."
"And you realize you may be the only Slytherin in your year?"
"Yes, Father."
"And you realize that you will likely be shunned, or worse, by the rest of the school?"
"Yes, Father."
"And you realize that Potter will be returning, hero of heroes, with everyone gushing all over him?"
"Yes, Father." Draco looks out the window and smiles. Suddenly the prospect of returning seems a little brighter.

Date: 2008-01-13 06:47 am (UTC)They were actually written for separate prompts, but I decided to post them together, to limit the flooding of the comms. And they seemed to work well ... one when he started Hogwarts, all excited to discover the place, and meet this horrible half-blood. Then after the war, looking ahead with trepidation, but pleased about seeing Harry again.
Interesting how they worked out that way. :)

So wonderful!
