"Why didn't you tell me what they said to you last night?" Harry asked.
"It wasn't important. Let's just forget about it."
"No, Draco, I can't do that. Ginny told me that Seamus was telling Death Eater jokes."
"Which they all found rather amusing. Well, except for Granger. She didn't laugh. In fact, I have to say that she looked decidedly uncomfortable the entire time."
"And Ron made ferret comments?"
"Yes, well, I'm rather used to that by now, but ..."
"Not when you're surrounded by his supporters, unable to properly defend yourself."
Draco gave Harry a look of surprise and nodded.
"And the Dementor's Kiss?"
"That was Ginny's little contribution, but a few of the others jumped in on that one for a few laughs."
"But your father, Draco ..."
"Deserved it," he deadpanned.
Harry wasn't going to argue the point, because he really did feel Lucius had deserved ... well, if not the kiss, at least life in Azkaban. But he was so enraged at the fact that Ginny could be so cold, so hurtful, that when he looked back at Draco, it was as though he were looking through a haze of fury. "Whether or not he deserved that fate isn't the point. He was still your father, and you don't deserve that sort of treatment."
"Just leave it, Harry. I can fight my own battles."
"I know that. It's just that the war is over. You shouldn't have to fight any more battles."
"What are you going to do, write to Santa to tell him they've been bad?"
"Coal in their stockings, the lot of them!" Harry joked.
"What do you mean, coal?" Draco asked, genuinely confused.
"The story of Santa goes like this: he makes two lists, a naughty list for boys and girls who have been bad for the past year, and a nice list for children who have been good all year. Those on the nice list get presents; those on the naughty list get a lump of coal."
Draco's expression turned serious. "Is that what the Muggles did to you, Harry? Did they give you coal for Christmas?"
"No, they didn't even go to the trouble of doing that. I suppose that's why I never bothered to send that last letter. I just remember feeling that, if there really was a Santa Claus, he didn't think I was even worth being on the naughty list."
Draco placed his hand gently on Harry's shoulder. "I think you're worth it, Harry."
"What?" Harry teased, trying to lighten up the conversation. "Am I on your naughty list, Draco?"
He had meant it as a joke, but as he heard the words come tumbling out of his mouth, and as he watched Draco's face turned a dark shade of pink, Harry realized just what it was that he had said. Unfortunately, the strange feeling in his stomach and the sudden warmth in the room didn't help him formulate any sort of coherent retraction.

Date: 2007-12-17 05:22 am (UTC)I did love the coals explanation, and hope that Hermione laid freely about with her slapping hand after Harry and Draco left.

Date: 2007-12-17 06:04 am (UTC)Thanks, hon. I'm sure that Ron, at the very least, got a smack or two upside the head. Meanwhile, it was Ginny who was the nastiest. Followed closely by Seamus, although he wasn't being intentionally nasty, just tactless.

Date: 2007-12-17 06:45 am (UTC)So I just read this little series all in one shot. And I adore. And cannot wait for more. *ponders* How am I supposed to wait?
Lovely job! I will wait, IMPATIENTLY, for more. *Grins and hugs*

Date: 2007-12-17 08:09 am (UTC)I might have known it was Ginny who made the Dementor jokes...the stupid slut.

Date: 2007-12-17 05:00 pm (UTC)It's interesting to see Draco shrugging off things--I see changes in him from how he would have acted before the war.

Date: 2007-12-17 06:17 pm (UTC)Yeah ... seeing the man you looked up to your whole life, someone who you thought held more power than anyone else, treated the way Voldemort (and the other DEs) treated Lucius in the end was a HUGE wake-up. I'd say that coupled with the treatment he received himself would wipe away a lot of his arrogance.

Date: 2007-12-17 10:58 pm (UTC)But awww... Harry saying that he though he wasn't worth being on Santa's list is really sad. :(
And Ginny was the one making Dementor jokes? *sporks her* I'm really glad Harry followed Draco out of there now. *nods firmly*

Date: 2007-12-18 03:13 am (UTC)*pets Harry*
Ginny's a wee bit insensitive. I think she suspects that there may be something more there between Harry and Draco, and she's jealous. Either that, or she's just a twat! ;)

Date: 2007-12-19 07:01 am (UTC)And his childhood makes me so sad ... but Draco's there to make it all better. *nods*
I love Draco's "worth it" line. But the naughty list! That's totally Harry's subconscious speaking for him!
I'm a happy fangirl ... I got to read so many parts in one night and there's two more to go! :D
Thanks for the update!
