Draco scribbled some last-minute items onto his notepad. He and Harry were going to host their first Christmas dinner party this year, and Draco was determined that it would be perfect. Harry had complained that he was going to excess, but really ... that's what Malfoys did.

There was only a handful of things still left to purchase. He shot a scathing look in Harry's direction as he scribbled 'corn' down. Honestly! Who has corn for Christmas supper? Whatever. Carrying on, he checked off mince pie and trifle for pudding. Then shooting Harry an altogether different look, Draco added, "whipped cream."

*giggles* Me too! As do my children. I have to admit, though, it was never on the menu for Christmas dinner.

Perhaps due to the unfortunate nature of my dad's false teeth and their habit of clacking rather loudly whenever he ate corn on the cob, much to my mother's dismay.

Draco is too cute! I love his addition ... I'm sure Harry won't be complaining at all. I certainly wouldn't!

Very cute ... I'm so ready for Christmas thanks to all your drabbles!

Thanks for writing and sharing!

Is corn for Crimbo a US tradition? *is curious*

Here in Britland I've only ever been served carrots & Brussels sprouts (the last of which, as far as I know, no-one ever eats except on C-Day and no-one but me actually likes) although I believe parsnips do put in a guest appearance in some households.

Oh, and for pudding we always have, erm, Pudding. *is not posh enough to have dessert*

Not sure about the US (I'm in Canada), but no ... it's a Thanksgiving tradition, definitely. We used to do mixed veggies a la German style, and carrots for Xmas. Eventually the nasty sprouts made an appearance, but I do know they are traditional. But my kids would eat corn at every meal. :o)

*smacks head* - oh, I do try to say 'supper' and 'pudding' instead of 'dinner' and 'dessert'. Thanks for (inadvertently) Brit-picking. *will go fix*

Oh, the words for meals, they are a minefield! We use all of pudding, dessert (and afters, and sweet) and also supper, dinner, tea. When to use which one depends largely on where you were brought up and which social class you belong to (although things are becoming increasingly blurred).

I was brought up with dinner being a hot meal you had in the evening (if it was cold and sandwichy, we called it tea).

This caused an unlikely amount of confusion with my Northern mother-in-law, to whom dinner is what you have at lunch-time, and the evening meal is either tea (hot or cold) or supper (ditto).

We always called what we had after the main course pudding, but she calls it dessert or sweet, which to me sound like lower-middle-class-trying-to-be-posh (like sticking your little finger out when drinking tea).

But if you go to a restaurant it's always dessert.

There is probably an etiquette book covering all this somewhere - and having realised just how confused I am on the whole issue, I should probably read it! It's like napkins and serviettes, I can never remember which one's posh and which one's common...

*head is reeling*

Um ... thanks? *grins* Seriously, it's interesting to hear all these neat little details. I try to 'Brit pick' according to the HP books, because it's the 'universe' I'm writing in. I have Scottish (Ayrshire) heritage, and we never called it anything but dinner in our house. At my aunt (from Aberdeen) & uncle's (from Glasgow), they called it supper.

He's channeling my obsession. ;)

We don't traditionally have it, but given the choice, my kids would have it at every meal. I could see Harry being all child-like about the meal, and Draco being all traditional and scoffing at a suggestion such as that. ;)

hee, i'd be happy with a KFC at christmas, although i do love the old spending-ages-cooking-a-christmas-meal meal (probably because i'm not the one cooking, lol) ;D

I like the spending-ages-cooking-a-Christmas-meal meal too, and I am the one preparing it. But I can always do without the after-dinner-hellish-cleanup-when-I-should-be-relaxing-with-a-drink part of it. Dishes (especially anything greasy) have always been my least favourite (not that I have a favourite) household chore. Yuck!

i quite like washing up, but only if i do it on non greasy plates! plus anything that has been left for a while and then it all gets hard. makes me feel sick (where is an lj puking face when you need it!?)

Too bad you live so far away. I'd be happy for you to pop by and "wash up" any time you felt the need. *g*

Corn! So yummy! *drools at Draco* Make sure that whipped cream is the can style, and extra heavy. Think about what you could DRAW on Harry later that night when all the guest have gone home... Or better yet, when they're still there... ;)

As far as corn being a tradition for holidays in the US, it has never been a feature at Thanksgiving, or Christmas in my household. I haven't heard of it much being in others, nor have I seen it.

Oh, definitely the 'drawing' type of whipped cream!

Really? I thought corn on the cob was something that was traditional all over North America for Thanksgiving ... maybe because ours is in October, and it's right after the harvest. But I thought it was shown in all sorts of plays with pilgrims when they sat down to eat and give thanks. *shrugs*

Well, it's definitely traditional in Canada. But not for Christmas.
