hd100's prompt of "can't." It also fits my GJ 100_prompts table #068 - "letters".
Summary: Ron discovers something about Harry he wasn't meant to.

A/N: This is a followup to my fic, Thinking of You.
"Oi, Harry! What's this?" Ron asked.
Harry's face paled as he walked into his study to discover Ron reading a letter - a very personal letter - that no one was supposed to see. He walked purposefully over to Ron and snatched the letter out of his hand, hoping that he hadn't read far enough to figure it out.
"It's private!" he said, glaring at Ron. "It's not meant to be read by anyone. Just like the rest."
"Just how many letters have you written, mate?"
"Enough."
"And he doesn't know? You've never sent any?"
"No," Harry sighed. "I can't."
"What do you mean you can't? Of course you can. You're Harry Potter, for Merlin's sake. You can do whatever you want."
"Very funny, Ron." Harry gave his friend a questioning look. He was angry that he had read a private letter that, like the others before it, Harry was going to toss into the fire, but he was more curious about the unexpected lack of a reaction.
"Not funny, Harry, but true. You know that half the witches in England want you, and I'd venture half the gay wizards too. Why wouldn't he?"
"But he hates me!"
"Does he?"
"Of course he does. Don't be stupid. We've been at each other's throats ever since we started school. What could possibly have changed?"
"Now there's an interesting question. I might ask you the same thing. If you've hated each other, yet you - for reasons that escape me, mind - are attracted to him, who's to say he doesn't feel the same way?"
"Who's to say he does?"
"Well, I'd imagine he would be the one to tell you. But if you don't ask him, you may never know. You can't expect an answer without asking a question, can you?"
Harry had managed to skirt the issue, changing the subject of conversation after that. Ron had dropped by to invite him over for dinner on Friday, and wanted to see if he'd grab a pint with him in the meantime.
Once Harry returned home, it was to see the yet unfinished letter sitting on his desk. He finished it, reading it over several times. He even went so far as to walk over to the fire, but he held back.
Why can't I bring myself to send this? he wondered aloud, before opening the desk drawer and putting it inside.

...oh so true...
It's kind of eerie that I read this fic (and the one before it) just after my roommate basically told me the same...

Date: 2007-11-12 06:25 pm (UTC)Yeah ... most who read 'Thinking of You' wanted me to continue it ... even though it was written for someone who likes less happy endings, and liked the way the original ended.
Alas, I caved to the pressure ... besides, a plot bunny kept bouncing around me with ideas for a few more instalments.
Glad you liked it.
