I lie awake every night watching the shadows ... watching, waiting, listening for cries, screams, or the sound of a body crashing against a wall. The sounds never come. All I hear is the wind rustling through the trees, or the rain landing on the roof, or a bird in the distance.
I know he's gone ... gone for good. But it doesn't make the nights any easier.
When sleep finally claims me, I really do hear the cries, the screams, and the crashes. I wake to find him beside me. He comes to me when he hears my screams.
