Your Dad is Next

"Aaaaaaaaaaal!" came a desperate cry from the vicinity of the Floo.

"Al, I believe you have a call," Harry shouted up the stairs. Sniggering, he turned to the fireplace. "Having a bit of a rough go, Scorpius?"

"That's putting it mildly, Mr Potter." Harry's gave him a curious look. "It's Dad. He's gone from amusing to mildly irritating to positively unbearable!" Scorpius whinged.

"Draco?" Harry and Draco had managed to move past their unpleasant history to become friends … of a sort, anyway. It was all thanks to the relationship their sons had. "Is there something wrong with your father?" Harry was genuinely concerned.

"Nothing a bit of time won't cure, I suppose." Scorpius sounded doubtful.

Al chose that moment to bound into the room, and Harry pushed back his concern to give them some privacy.

"Oh, thank Merlin, Al!" Harry heard Scorpius exclaim. The near-drama-queen quality of his exasperation reminded Harry of another blonde. He grinned, imagining things weren't nearly as bad as the Malfoy men were making them out to be.

Harry hadn't meant to listen in on their conversation, but as Scorpius's anxiety rose, so too did his voice. Harry heard Al trying to calm his boyfriend down. After a while, when Scorpius's anxiety seemed to be rubbing off on Al - if his agitated tone of voice was any indication - Harry started to grow concerned about Draco again. Maybe there was something terribly wrong.

"I don't know how he'll make it through this." Scorpius's voice carried into the hall as Harry made his way back into the front room. That did sound serious.

"Scorpius," Harry said, "I can hear that you are very upset. Is there anything I can do?"

"I don't think so, no."

Harry could see the worry on Scorpius‘s face. "Is your father okay?"

"No, he's not," Scorpius admitted. "I just … I don't know what to do."

"Shall I come over? See how he's doing?"

"No!" Scorpius shouted. "He'll kill me!"

"But if he's not well …"

"I'm hoping he'll get over it soon," Scorpius said quite unconvincingly.

"If there's anything I can do," Harry offered. "Anything at all, you just call."

"Thanks, Mr Potter."

"Any time." Harry left them in peace. He wasn't about to tell the boys, but he was planning to check on Draco later.

"You just wait, Al," Harry heard en route to the kitchen. "Your dad is next."

What? What on earth did Scorpius mean by that?

"Don't say that!" Al cried. "From what you've told me, I don't know if I could stand to watch him go through that!"

"Oh, your life will become a nightmare too," Scorpius assured Al. "Less than two months from now, Al, and it'll be your dad who's turning forty!"
