In the beginning, he had been taught about the importance of purity. Anyone less than pure was unworthy, was contaminating the gene pool, was weakening wizardkind.
He had heard of Muggles and what they had done - had tried to do - to witches and wizards over the years. He never understood why wizards hadn't simply fought back and eradicated them then.
He had heard of Muggle lovers, but hadn't had much experience dealing with them. Mother and Father had ensured that he hadn't had to deal with them sooner than was necessary. He had been thankful for that.
***
In the beginning, he'd heard about the Dark Lord and his vision for a better, stronger wizarding community. He knew his father had been the Dark Lord's right hand. It was something to be proud of, to revere.
Then he heard the story of a baby boy who had been the downfall of the greatest wizard that had ever lived. At first, he'd been in awe of such a powerful child. Then he found out he was a half-blood.
Later, he found out the boy was his own age, and would be going to the same school. He couldn't wait.
***
On the day he went to Diagon Alley to get his supplies for school, he was elated. He knew that he would be in Slytherin. He knew that he would be looked up to, thanks to his name, thanks to his father. He couldn't wait to start school.
He met a young boy he'd never seen before, also getting fitted for Hogwarts' robes, who looked out of place. He knew just what to do. He told him about Slytherin, guided him away from Hufflepuff, and pointed out that ridiculous oaf outside the store.
It was the beginning of the end.

Date: 2008-01-13 02:24 pm (UTC)Draco's voice rings very true here, and the last line was a killer.
Can't wait for more!

Date: 2008-01-13 05:53 pm (UTC)Actually, I did this as a one-shot, since we all know what happens after this. Sorry?

Date: 2008-01-13 05:56 pm (UTC)I was really only writing this as a one-shot. I meant that it was the first time he was rejected, his first interaction with a half-blood, and the 'beginning of the end' of Draco's worshipping of the Dark Lord and the pureblood ways. Not really so ominous. Better?

Date: 2008-01-15 06:46 pm (UTC)Poor Draco. *sniffles* I love how you've captured his childhood innocence... everything he says seems so tainted, yet he believes whole-heartedly in what Lucius tells him. :/

It was awesome, thank you, full of waterslides and beaches and blowholes. You Canadians might cherish your cold white winters, but we Aussies love our sun. ^_^
*cuddles you*

Date: 2008-01-17 11:50 pm (UTC)No skiing yet ... all the snow melted. *pouts*
Not that I want lots of snow, but I would like to get at least one or two days in ... as it was, the kids were busy with their dad & then I was busy with Christmas prep when there actually was snow, and now it's gone. So ... gotta wait for more.

Date: 2008-01-18 05:00 pm (UTC)Except, err, there's going to more snow? *faints a bit*
Still, you have fun skiing, I guess. Though how anyway stays so happy and content in such cold weather is beyond me. :/
*tries to cuddle you warm* :D

Date: 2008-01-18 06:48 pm (UTC)Most of our snow comes in Jan/Feb, which is the reason I was so whiny about the dumpings we received before Christmas.
I just make the best of it. It's that or be miserable for months.
