"Did you enjoy your walk?" Narcissa asked once they were comfortable in the sitting room.
"Yes," Harry replied. "Draco was right; the grounds are spectacular, and the gardens, well ..."
"The gardens are my favourite part of the Manor," she agreed, "but I prefer them in the spring and summer, when the flowers are in bloom, and the fragrant air reaches as far as the house."
"Draco told me that I should come back then, too," Harry replied.
"Did he?" she asked, her eyebrow raised in a very Malfoy-ish way. It must be in the genes.
"Yes, Mother, I did. Is that a problem?" Draco challenged.
"Of course not. You may invite Mr Potter here whenever you wish."
"Harry. Please call me Harry."
"Very well, then, Harry. You may call me Narcissa." She turned to her son. "Draco, be a dear, would you, and check on dinner." He looked warily at his mother, then at Harry, then grudgingly left the room.
"Mr -- Harry, I must say that I was surprised to see you today. I wasn't aware that you and Draco were friends. I rather thought the two of you disliked each other."
Well, no one could accuse her of skirting an issue.
"Actually, Mrs -- Narcissa, we didn't really get on until recently."
"So what is it that you want from my son, Harry?"
"Nothing." At her look of disbelief, he continued. "After everything that your family has been through, it makes sense that you'd be suspicious of anyone suddenly taking an interest in, or even being nice to either one of you."
Narcissa nodded. "So what is your agenda?"
"I don't have one," he said honestly. "I have more money than I will ever need, and more power than I've ever wanted. I saw what Voldemort did to your family, what he did to Draco. I meant what I said when I testified at your hearings. Draco may have made bad decisions, but I believe he felt he had no choice. I don't think he's a bad person; in fact, since I've been getting to know him better, I think he's a wonderful person. I'm only sorry I didn't get to know him sooner."
"So you want to help him?"
"Yes and no. I think we're good for each other. To be honest, he's been doing more for me --"
"And what might that be?" she asked.
"Well, let's just say that I wasn't feeling too much Christmas spirit before Draco and I struck up this friendship."
"And now?"
"I don't know. I suppose now I feel that there's something to look forward to, someone that I can celebrate the season with."
"Dinner is ready." Harry jumped at the sound of Draco's voice. "Are you quite done interrogating my friend, Mother?"
As she stood up to go into the dining room for dinner, Narcissa didn't look abashed in the least. She smiled at Harry, then rested a hand on her son's shoulder. "For now," she said.

Date: 2007-12-21 02:04 am (UTC)I like how she sent Draco out of the room like that ... it wasn't very subtle but it was definitely funny.
I'm really enjoying this series ... it definitely puts a smile on my face every time I see you've updated.
Thanks for the new chapter! :D

Date: 2007-12-21 02:39 am (UTC)Harry's had enough experience handling Ministry reps, and he's had to speak out since the war enough times that he's not too bad at it any more. :o)

Date: 2007-12-21 06:36 am (UTC)I did get thrown by one line though: "Did he?" she asked, her eyebrow raised in a very Malfoy-ish way. It must be in the genes.
Unless the Black/Malfoy family tree is more convoluted than the Tapestry indicates, I don't think that Narcissa can have inherited an eyebrow-raising gene from her in-laws *g*

Date: 2007-12-21 06:52 am (UTC)Nope ... but Draco (aka 'Malfoy') could have inherited it from her. I did actually ponder the Black vs. Malfoy thing when writing that, and figured that Harry would associate that gesture with 'Malfoy' as he thought of him then - as opposed to saying 'in a Draco-ish way'. Make sense?

Date: 2007-12-21 07:17 am (UTC)A friend of mine kept her kids in line by threatening to do something in public that would embarass them - it worked.
I can't Narcissa waltzing round Sainsburys singing rude imericks though. OTOH...
