Summary: Misunderstanding and confusion abound during an eighth-year Quidditch match.

Dead Man Walking
"I'm going to crush you, Potter!" Malfoy screamed as he flew past Harry, knocking into him for good measure.
The venom in Malfoy's voice hit Harry like a slap in the face. They'd been getting on fine this year, but Malfoy's comment wasn't the usual taunting; this was personal.
Harry tried to catch up, but every time he got close, the other Seeker veered off in another direction. Harry knew he should concentrate on the game, but he couldn't get past the vitriol of Malfoy's comment, and the obvious fury in his every look.
What did I do? Harry wondered.
Harry gave it up as a lost cause, and tried instead to focus on the game. He ignored the uneasy feeling in his stomach and the tightness in his chest, in favour of searching for the snitch.
The winged, golden ball finally made an appearance, just behind Malfoy. As Harry accelerated towards it, rather than turning round and going after it also, Malfoy flew right at Harry!
As Harry narrowly avoided getting the handle of Malfoy's broom in his ribs, Malfoy growled, "Crush you." Then he was gone again, flying back to where the snitch had been.
What. The. Fuck?
Harry continued to look for the snitch, but his mind was elsewhere. What exactly had he done to Malfoy to get him this upset?
They'd met a few times over the summer, for Harry to return Malfoy's wand, and to discuss the Ministry's cases against all of the Malfoys. Harry had testified for both Narcissa and Draco, but had been silent in the case of Lucius.
Harry had thought they'd got past their history, and had formed a friendship of sorts. Truth be told, Harry had even developed a bit of a crush on Draco.
So what was going on?
Three more times Malfoy nearly collided with Harry, and three times Harry managed to save his ribs from the promised crushing.
It was like back when they had first been in school together. No … this was worse. Malfoy used to take every opportunity to make things difficult for Harry, pushing him out of the way, maybe hurting him in the process. He'd cheat, and he'd play dirty. But he still played to win. Now Malfoy wasn't going after the snitch at all.
There was no doubt in Harry's mind. This was personal.
Now if only Harry knew what had happened.
Harry's fingers wrapped themselves around the snitch just before he was hit with a bone-crushing mass in his side.
He and Malfoy went tumbling, Harry barely managing a Cushioning Charm before they landed hard on the ground.
"Bastard!" Malfoy yelled.
"It's just a game. If you'd concentrated on the snitch instead of bashing into me at every opportunity, maybe you'd have won."
"This isn't about the game and you know it," he growled. "Just because you sent the Weasel to do your dirty work, don't think I'm fooled."
Ah. It was all becoming clear now. Ron was a dead man.
"Nice try, Potter, pretending that we might someday become friends," Malfoy continued. "You almost had me fooled."
"Malfoy," Harry said.
"I suppose it's my own fault, really."
"Malfoy."
"I should have known better than to trust someone."
"Malfoy!"
He glared at Harry. "Why the hell should I care anyway?" He lifted himself up off the ground. "You're not worth it."
"You can trust me. I didn't do anything," Harry explained. "Ron hates you of his own free will."
Malfoy looked incredulously at Harry.
Then Harry pulled Draco in for a kiss. Draco kissed back.
Ron's cry echoed in the distance.
