Storming towards the kitchen, Draco tried not to let his anger get the better of him. The nerve of his mother, dismissing him like that! She wasn't exactly subtle about it, asking him to check on dinner. Like she couldn't have summoned a house-elf directly to the sitting room!

He had always hated this side of his mother. She was over-protective and it was embarrassing. She had pulled stunts like this as far back as he could remember. Of course, when he was very young, he imagined that she pre-screened all his potential friends before he ever met them face-to-face. When he started at Hogwarts and invited friends to visit, she would always find some sort of excuse for him to leave the room so she could interrogate them.

Over the years, there were a few that obviously hadn't passed whatever test she had administered. His fury started to dissipate as embarrassment took over. What would she be asking Harry now?

He returned to the sitting room as soon as he was told dinner was ready.

"... now I feel that there's something to look forward to, someone that I can celebrate the season with," Harry's voice carried from the sitting room. Draco felt his irritation subside a little, as he hoped Harry had been talking about him.

"Dinner is ready," Draco announced. Turning on his mother, he asked, "Are you quite done interrogating my friend, Mother?"

Narcissa looked completely unaffected by his comment, ignoring the arrows of indignation he was shooting her way. She sauntered over and said, "For now." Honestly! The woman was infuriating.

Resisting the urge to partake in a little too much Christmas spirit, Draco remained on his guard throughout the meal. Dinner progressed nicely until dessert was served.

"I have to say, Harry, that I was quite concerned about Draco going to work at Hogwarts. I didn't think very many Slytherins were contributing."

"Actually, I believe Draco is the only Slytherin from our year. Most of the helpers are from my house, with a few from the other two."

"And how are they treating him?"

"Alright, Mother, that's enough!" Draco interrupted. "I am not a child, and I'd thank you not to speak as though I'm not in the room!"

Harry's hand came out to rest over Draco's. He turned to look at a smirking Harry, who squeezed his hand.

"Draco, don't be too upset. She's your mother. She cares about you. And I suspect she has a pretty good idea of the welcome you received." Harry looked at Narcissa and nodded. "She also probably realizes that you won't tell her anything, so she has to find out from somewhere else."

Harry's hand was still on his own, and he was smiling that slightly crooked, unbelievably endearing smile of his. Draco suddenly found himself unable to stay angry with Harry in the room. He gave Harry's hand a squeeze back and drew his away.

"Harry, would you please excuse us for a minute?"

"Oh, sure," Harry said. "I'll just go into the sitting room." As he walked past Draco, he laid a hand on his shoulder. Draco felt a tingle spread down his arm and ...

"Go easy on her, yeah? She loves you." Then he left.

Aww... Harry's already got him wrapped around his finger, and he doesn't even realize it!

[identity profile] sesheta-66.livejournal.com 2007-12-21 03:54 am (UTC)(link)
Hee! He just melts when Harry smiles. ♥ ♥ ♥

But I'm pretty sure it's mutual. *nods*

Harry's too cute for words! Oh Draco ... you're so gone. :D Draco nearly throwing a hissy fit made me smile though. I could so see him being all upset.

"She had pulled stunts like this as far back as he could remember. Of course, when he was very young, he imagined that she pre-screened all his potential friends before he ever met them face-to-face."

You know, I can imagine that's not too far from the truth. :) Narcissa just wants what's best for her baby boy. But Draco's a slytherin and they don't like to be molly-cuddled.

Another fantastic part ... thanks for the update!

Harry would love to have a mother to love him and fuss over him and do embarrassing things like that. Well ... unless he had one. *grins*

Thanks, hon. ♥

awww, I love those too
Thanx!

Thanks :o)

I love Narcissa, but I love Harry even more in this story. He's so mature and understanding and grown up. I think Draco is a goner....

[identity profile] sesheta-66.livejournal.com 2007-12-21 05:05 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks, hon. ♥

Harry would love to have his mom be over-protective of him, so he doesn't want Draco to be too hard on Narcissa. *nods*

[identity profile] piratesmile331.livejournal.com 2007-12-21 06:46 am (UTC)(link)
I'm sure it's pretty obvious to Narcissa, even after this short time, that Draco is smitten with Harry. And Harry gave perfect answers to all her questions, so she shouldn't have any qualms about Draco's new "friend".

[identity profile] sesheta-66.livejournal.com 2007-12-21 06:54 am (UTC)(link)
Nah ... I don't think she'll be too worried after this.

[identity profile] thrnbrooke.livejournal.com 2007-12-21 07:04 am (UTC)(link)
Oh how wonderful! Even growing up w/o a mother he understands!

[identity profile] sesheta-66.livejournal.com 2007-12-21 07:51 am (UTC)(link)
Yup, yup. After years of being reminded that his mother died for him, he knows that mums don't stop at anything when protecting their babies.

There's gonna be a shoot-out at the Malfoy Corral!

[identity profile] sesheta-66.livejournal.com 2007-12-21 07:52 am (UTC)(link)
Hee! I think the wands will stay away. No worries.

[identity profile] ravenqueen55.livejournal.com 2007-12-21 11:13 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, Draco has it BAD!!! And so does Harry...he just doesn't realize it yet!

I love Harry in this story ~ so grown up and pleasant. Can't wait for more!

[identity profile] sesheta-66.livejournal.com 2007-12-21 03:47 pm (UTC)(link)
They both do, definitely. Harry knows it, too. I think it really kicked in when they were in the gardens as well.

Thanks. It's amazing what dying and coming back to life can do for a person's maturity level, isn't it? ;)

Next installment later today.

[identity profile] prettyhairs.livejournal.com 2007-12-21 03:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Harry already knows how to push the buttons, doesn't he?;)

I like Narcissa:)

[identity profile] sesheta-66.livejournal.com 2007-12-21 03:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Hee! He's just winging it right now.

[identity profile] juwel-fic.livejournal.com 2007-12-21 06:48 pm (UTC)(link)
I just love hissy!Draco. Given that his mum's done that to him his entire life, I think he's entitled to a little frustration.

Harry's handling it like a pro, lol.

[identity profile] sesheta-66.livejournal.com 2007-12-21 07:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Hee! I'd be irritated if I were Draco too. Harry just hasn't had a mum to fuss over him & be over-protective and embarrassing, so he'd welcome it (y'know ... once or twice).

Harry's had a lot of experience dealing with people asking him questions. He's also matured a lot, so I think he's doing well too.

Thanks ♥

[identity profile] lackofmendacity.livejournal.com 2007-12-21 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Awwww... I sense a little bonding between Harry and Narcissa that Draco isn't privy to. :) And Harry's so sweet, I imagine he's very touched by how concerned Narcissa is about her son, where as Draco merely sees it as prying. *g*

Hee, yay for tingling feelings! ^_^

[identity profile] sesheta-66.livejournal.com 2007-12-21 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Harry hasn't had the opportunity to get embarrassed by his parents, so any attention would be welcome. *nods* He thinks it's wonderful that Narcissa loves her son so much.

Mmm ... tingling feelings are ♥.

I'm really enjoying this. I can't wait to read more. I love the way Harry and Draco's relationship is so realistic in the way it's changing. :)

[identity profile] sesheta-66.livejournal.com 2007-12-22 05:19 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks. Another entry when the next prompt comes up.

I absolutely adore this series!! I'm sorry I haven't commented on every one but it is tons of fun. Thanks for sharing!!

I love Draco's "I'm not a child" *stomp, pout* -- so cute!!

And sweet Harry! Yay!!

[identity profile] sesheta-66.livejournal.com 2007-12-22 05:21 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks. ♥ No worries about not commenting - I'm glad you're enjoying it.

Draco is a bit embarrassed - after all, he is an adult. :D

Harry would just love to have a mum embarrass him. *pets him*

[identity profile] nocturnali.livejournal.com 2007-12-22 11:25 am (UTC)(link)
Hand holding and touches. Just like lovers do and they probably don't even realise.
Narcissa does care about Draco and that's lovely to see. So many times she is portrayed as a cold hard bitch.

Lovely.

[identity profile] sesheta-66.livejournal.com 2007-12-22 09:30 pm (UTC)(link)
A small thing, but very intimate. :)

Since the books were written from Harry's pov, all the reader got to see was his view of events. It stands to reason that he would only see his own, jaded, one-dimensional interpretation of certain people given his situation. That's why I think fanfiction is awesome, because we get to explore the other dimensions of the characters, and show them as human beings.

Thanks.

[identity profile] nocturnali.livejournal.com 2007-12-22 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
The fact that the books were written from Harry's pov and that he was only a child (really, in the grand scheme of things) was the reason he couldn't see the absolute love and adoration between Sirius and Remus.
We could see it. Hell, even the directors of the films could see it... : D

Hee! How true, how true! And I positively ADORE that icon!

Merry Christmas!

Poor Draco it has to be uncomfortable for him
And I love how Harry is reacting to it all
And now Draco gets the 3rd degree

excellent
